RV Level

How to level an RV with blocks, and how high each one has to be

Put the phone flat, read four numbers, and start with the wheel that shows the biggest one. RV Level shows the height in centimetres for each wheel, so you stop guessing with a bubble on the dash.

Why one number per wheel beats a bubble

A bubble tells you that you are off, not by how much at each corner. RV Level does the arithmetic: it takes the tilt from the phone's motion sensor, your wheelbase and your track width, and returns how far each wheel has to come up to match the highest one.

The highest wheel always reads 0.0, because you cannot dig the ground away. Every other number is a lift.

Read the four wedge heights

  1. Open the Vehicle tab and tap your vehicle. Under Dimensions type the Wheelbase and the Track width in metres from the vehicle papers. Wrong values give wrong blocks.
  2. Lay the phone flat on the floor, a step or the dashboard, screen up, with the top of the phone pointing toward the front of the vehicle. Held upright it shows Lay the phone flat and no numbers.
  3. Open the Level tab. The grid shows four values in cm: FL front left, FR front right, RL rear left, RR rear right.
  4. The highlighted wheel has the largest number. Build that block or ramp first.
  5. Drive up, stop, and look again. Repeat until the Level badge appears.

A worked example

Say the phone reads 2.0° tilted to the right and 1.5° nose-down, on a vehicle with a 3.5 m wheelbase and a 1.8 m track (the values the app starts with).

Wedge heights for 2.0° roll and 1.5° pitch, wheelbase 3.5 m, track 1.8 m
WheelLift (cm)
Front right FR15.5
Front left FL9.2
Rear right RR6.3
Rear left RL0.0

Start with the front right at 15.5 cm. Once that corner is up, read again: the other three numbers change as the vehicle moves.

What the colours and the ring mean

The bubble is green when the biggest wedge is under 1 cm, orange from 1 to under 4 cm and red above that. Level means 0.5 cm or less on every wheel, and it has to hold for 1.2 seconds before the ring completes and the badge shows. A bump while you are still driving up does not count.

Mistakes that cost you a re-do

  • Putting the phone on a seat or a worktop that does not move with the vehicle. Use the floor, a step or the dash.
  • Turning the phone sideways. The top of the screen is taken as the front of the vehicle, so a phone lying crosswise swaps the sideways and nose readings.
  • Forgetting Zero. If the phone sits crooked in the cab, press Zero once while the vehicle is on ground you know is level; the offset is saved for that vehicle.
  • Raising only the worst corner. All four numbers matter, which is why the grid shows all four.
  • Trusting a block you have not measured. The app gives a height in cm; check that your block or ramp really lifts that much at the point where the tyre sits.

Questions and answers

Does it work for both side to side and front to back?
Yes, it reads both at once. Sideways tilt raises the left or right pair, nose-up or nose-down raises the front or rear pair, and the grid combines them into one number per wheel.
Can I use it without entering my wheelbase?
A new install uses 3.5 m wheelbase and 1.8 m track. That is fine to try, but for real blocks type your own values, because the numbers scale with them.
Does it show inches?
No. Heights are in centimetres and the vehicle sizes in metres; the app has no inch mode.
How do I know when I have blocked enough?
When the largest of the four numbers is 0.5 cm or less and stays there for 1.2 seconds, a green Level badge appears. Before that, the bubble colour tells you the size of what is left: green under 1 cm, orange up to 4 cm, red above.
