Can an iPhone detect EMF? Using the magnetometer for ghost hunting
Partly, and the honest answer disappoints most people who look into it. An iPhone has a magnetometer — the compass sensor — which reads the static magnetic field in microtesla (µT). It cannot touch the alternating fields from mains wiring that a dedicated EMF meter picks up. Spirit Box's Energy ITC shows that magnetometer reading, smoothed, with a level word and a spike alert.
What the iPhone can and cannot measure
The magnetometer reports the field along three axes, and the app combines them into one total: the square root of x² + y² + z². Earth's own field keeps that total a few dozen µT almost anywhere on the planet, so a reading of zero never happens.
As magnetometer readers, these apps genuinely work — they react to magnets, steel furniture, a phone case with a magnet in it, speakers, chargers. As a meter for the alternating fields around household wiring, no, not even close, and nothing about the accuracy here is calibrated against anything.
How Energy ITC turns readings into a number
The app reads the sensor 30 times a second and shows a weighted average of the last 10 readings, with the newest counting most. That smooths out jitter. The value is shown with one decimal and a level word.
| Reading (µT) | Level shown |
|---|---|
| under 20 | Very Low |
| 20 to 39.9 | Low |
| 40 to 54.9 | Normal |
| 55 to 69.9 | Elevated |
| 70 to 84.9 | High |
| 85 and above | Spike! |
Worked example
Here is an example: a sample of x = 20, y = -30, z = 25 µT, for a total of 43.87 µT. With the last ten totals reading 44.0, 44.5, 45.0, 44.8, 45.2, 45.1, 44.9, 45.3, 52.0 and 58.0, the weighted average shown lands at 48.5 µT, level Normal. The two recent jumps pull it up; the older readings hold it back.
Spikes are judged against the room itself. The app keeps the last 50 smoothed readings as a baseline. With a baseline of 45.0 µT and a spread (standard deviation) of 1.5 µT, a reading of 51.0 µT is 4 spreads above normal. That is a significant spike and shows SPIKE DETECTED.
| Spreads above baseline | Spike |
|---|---|
| 2 | minor |
| 3 | moderate |
| 4 | significant |
| 6 | major |
Run the EMF Response Test
- Open the home menu, tap Protocols and pick EMF Response Test (7-10 min).
- Move away from routers, speakers and power adapters, and take off any magnetic phone case.
- From PRO ITC Modules, tap Energy ITC, then Start. Put the phone down and wait for the reading to settle.
- Choose an Output Mode: Off, Text or Speech. With Text or Speech, words appear or are spoken; stronger readings and spikes make them more likely and more frequent.
- Ask for a response within a 10-second window, and stay still.
- Repeat the same request three times and compare the spikes and words each time.
Under Speech Settings you can set Speech Rate, Pitch Randomization, Enable Effects and Reverb Intensity. Custom Words lets you add your own words; each output then has a 20% chance of being one of them.
Common mistakes
- Holding the phone yourself. Your own hand moving or turning it changes the reading more than anything else in the room ever will.
- Setting it down near a fridge, radiator, laptop or speaker without noticing. Metal and magnets shift the number quietly.
- Treating any single number as meaningful on its own. Only a change against the settled baseline says anything, and even that usually has an ordinary cause.
Energy ITC is a PRO module, though you can try it once free with Watch an ad to try a full PRO session on the home screen. One thing worth knowing: its readings and words never get saved to Session History, so if you want a record, note it in the journal.
