How to record EVP on iPhone, bookmark moments and review them
To record EVP on iPhone with Spirit Box: open Ghost Box, tap Start, then the record button, ask your questions, tap the bookmark button whenever something stands out, stop, and review the file in Recordings. You could do roughly the same thing with the built-in Voice Memos app — what Spirit Box actually adds on top is the bookmarks and a recording list sitting next to the rest of your session.
What an EVP session is
EVP stands for electronic voice phenomena — sounds on a recording that listeners interpret as voices nobody heard live in the room. The method itself is simple: record a quiet session, ask questions with pauses, listen back carefully afterwards. The hard part, almost every time, is remembering what was actually going on in the room at each moment once you are three listens deep.
Where recording lives in the app
Audio recording is part of the Ghost Box module, which is PRO. Without PRO you can use it once through Watch an ad to try a full PRO session on the home screen. Sound Analysis is free and reacts to sound peaks, but it does not keep any audio, so it is not an EVP recorder.
Steps
- On the home screen, open PRO ITC Modules and tap the Ghost Box card.
- Optional: open Bank Settings and turn off banks or lower their Volume, so less box sound ends up in the recording.
- Tap Start. The record button only works while the Ghost Box is running.
- Tap the record button. The red Recording bar shows the elapsed time.
- Ask a question, state the time or a number out loud, and leave 10 to 20 seconds of silence.
- Tap the bookmark button every time you hear a noise, someone moves, or a sound seems to answer. The counter shows how many marks you have.
- Tap the stop button to save the file, then Stop.
- Tap the folder icon to open Recordings. Choose a file to play it, check Recording Details (date, duration, markers) and jump to the Bookmarked Moments.
- Use Share Recording to send the audio file to your computer or a teammate.
What the recording contains
It records whatever the microphone hears into an M4A file on the device — your voice, the room, and whatever part of the Ghost Box sound reaches the mic, all mixed together with nothing filtered or cleaned up. That raw mess is actually what you want if you plan to review the file elsewhere later.
| Bookmark | Time | What happened in the room |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 00:35 | Car passed outside |
| 2 | 01:20 | Question: is anyone here? |
| 3 | 02:05 | Floor creak, nobody moving |
Tips for cleaner EVP recordings
- Say contamination out loud as it happens: "that was me", "car outside". It saves hours of doubt later.
- Do not whisper. A whisper on the recording is hard to tell apart from anything else.
- Put the phone down on something soft and do not touch it; handling noise is loud on a phone microphone.
- Log each recording in the Investigation Journal with the tag EVP, the place and your notes, so you know later which file came from where.
