Inventory counting app for iPhone: tally stock by hand
A delivery of dozens of cases counts fast once the step size is set right. Create one counter per item, set the step to the pack or case size, and tap once per case. Long-press for a one-off +5 or +10, or Enter Amount… to correct to an exact figure.
When a tally counter is enough
A full stocktake needs real software. A quick shelf count, a cycle count of a few items, or checking a delivery against the invoice just needs a clicker you trust. That's all this is — no barcodes, no product list, no export. It is not built to run a warehouse.
Set up a counter per item
- On Counters, tap + and choose New Counter. Name it after the item.
- In Details, set the step size to the number of units in a case, for example 12. It goes from 1 to 100.
- Tap Save and open the counter. The big button now reads +12.
- Tap once for each full case.
- For loose units, long-press the big button: +5, +10 or Enter Amount….
Worked examples
| Starting count | Step size | Action | Result | Logged in history |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 12 | 7 taps | 84 | 7 entries of +12 |
| 84 | 12 | Long-press +5, then +10 | 99 | +5 and +10 |
| 40 | 5 | 1 tap | 45 | +5 |
| 3 | 5 | Decrease | 0 | -3, with a warning vibration |
| 37 | any | Enter Amount… 250 | 250 | +213 |
Note the fourth row: Decrease never goes below 0, and history logs only what was really taken off. Enter Amount… accepts whole numbers and logs the difference, so the log still adds up.
Keep a running record
History shows every change with its time, grouped by day, with Total taps and Current at the top. If two people ask how you reached a number, the log shows each case you tapped.
Done with an aisle? Swipe right on the counter and tap Reset. The count goes to 0 and the history stays.
Many items?
3 counters is the free limit, full stop. For a quick check, reuse them — note the total, reset, rename for the next item. For a full aisle at once, Pro's unlimited counters are worth it, and you can drag them into shelf order with Edit on the list.
Mistakes to avoid
- Forgetting the step size. A counter set to 12 adds 12 per tap, also with the volume buttons. Check the label on the big button before you start.
- Relying on the app as your record. There is no export or sync, so copy totals into your stock sheet before you delete a counter.
- Using Delete instead of Reset. Delete removes the counter and its history for good.
