How do you use a kick counter app in pregnancy?
Make one counter called Kicks, set a goal of 10 and tap the big button each time you feel a movement; the 10th tap vibrates and shows Goal reached!. History keeps the time of every tap, so you can read how long the ten took, and each day gets its own section.
Used every evening through the third trimester, the app mostly does one thing: put a big number on the screen and a time next to each tap.
Set up a Kicks counter
- On Counters, tap + and pick New Counter.
- Type Kicks as the Name. Leave the step size at 1, so one tap is one movement.
- Turn on Set a goal. The goal starts at 50, so tap the minus on the goal stepper until it reads Goal: 10 (or the number your midwife uses).
- Tap Save, then open the counter.
- When you feel a movement, tap the big +1 button once.
Lying on her left side in a dark room, the click on each tap was the first thing she asked to switch off. Settings > Feedback > Sound turns it off; the light vibration stays, which is enough to know the tap landed.
What one evening looked like
Ten movements, tapped as they came. One was a double tap by mistake, fixed with Decrease. History, read top to bottom, is newest first; here it is in the order it happened.
| Tap | Shown in History | Time |
|---|---|---|
| 1st movement | +1 to 1 | 19:02 |
| 2nd | +1 to 2 | 19:05 |
| 3rd | +1 to 3 | 19:09 |
| 4th, tapped twice by mistake | +1 to 4, +1 to 5 | 19:14 |
| Fix | -1 to 4 | 19:14 |
| 5th | +1 to 5 | 19:16 |
| 6th | +1 to 6 | 19:22 |
| 7th (bar 0.7 full, 7 / 10) | +1 to 7 | 19:27 |
| 8th | +1 to 8 | 19:31 |
| 9th | +1 to 9 | 19:36 |
| 10th, Goal reached! | +1 to 10 | 19:41 |
From 19:02 to 19:41 is 39 minutes. The app does not work that out for you: there is no timer and no "time to 10" figure, so you subtract the first time from the last yourself. That is the main limitation to know about. The day header reads +10, and Total taps at the top says 12, because the mistake and its fix are logged too.
The next day
Swipe right on Kicks in the list and tap Reset. The count goes back to 0, but yesterday's section stays in History. After a week you get seven sections, each with its own net count and times, which is something to show at an appointment if you are asked.
Counting from an Apple Watch
The watch app shows the same Kicks counter. Tap the screen or turn the Digital Crown one click per movement; the minus in the bottom bar takes one back. The watch shows the bar and 7 / 10, but no Goal reached! message; that only appears on the iPhone. You have to create the counter on the iPhone first. One catch: the time in History is the time the iPhone received the tap. With the phone on the bedside table that is the same minute, but if the phone is out of range, taps wait on the watch and all get the time they arrived.
Free, Pro and what it cannot do
- Free: the counter, the goal, History by day, the Apple Watch app and counting with the volume buttons. Up to 3 counters. No ads appear on the counting screen.
- Pro (weekly, monthly, yearly or a one-time Lifetime purchase) adds unlimited counters, a display-only Home Screen widget, more colours and no ads in the rest of the app. Nothing on this page needs it.
- No timer, no reminders, no session start and stop, no chart.
- No export or sharing, and no iCloud: the history lives on that one iPhone and its paired watch.
- It cannot feel anything for you. Every count is your tap.
It is still a reasonable pick over paper, for one reason: the times write themselves while you lie there with your eyes shut. The goal buzz and the watch are a bonus. If you want sessions timed and a graph drawn, skip it.
