Counter app that uses the volume buttons to count
Wet or gloved hands make the screen unreliable to tap. Go to Settings, then Feedback, and flip on Count with volume buttons. With a counter screen open, either button adds one; everywhere else they just change the volume like normal.
Why count with a physical button?
A touch screen needs your eyes on it. A volume button doesn't care: phone in a pocket, face down on a table, or in your hand with your eyes shut during dhikr, it still works. It also feels close to the click on a mechanical hand tally, which is what door counters and birdwatchers already know.
Turn it on
- On the Counters screen, tap the gear at the top left to open Settings.
- Under Feedback, turn on Count with volume buttons. It is off by default.
- Go back and open the counter you want to use.
- Press volume up or volume down. Each press counts one.
What one press adds
| Counter type | One press adds |
|---|---|
| Standard counter, step size 1 | 1 |
| Standard counter, step size 5, at 40 | 5 (now 45) |
| Tasbeeh counter | 1 bead; a double vibration at the end of each cycle |
Both buttons only count up — there's no volume-button way to go back if you overshoot. Use the minus button on screen, or Undo on a tasbeeh counter.
How it behaves
- It only works while a counter screen is open and visible. On the list, in Settings or in other apps, the buttons control the volume.
- When it starts, the app moves the system volume to the middle so both buttons have room, and it hides the volume indicator.
- Holding a button down does not count again and again. Presses closer together than 0.12 seconds are ignored, which caps it at about 8 presses per second.
- Music or a podcast keeps playing while you count.
- Standard counters click if Sound is on and vibrate if Vibration is on; tasbeeh counters only vibrate.
Good uses
- Tasbeeh and dhikr with the phone in your hand and your eyes closed.
- Counting people through a door without looking down.
- Laps, reps, birds or cars, with the phone in a pocket.
Troubleshooting
- Presses change the volume instead of counting: check that Count with volume buttons is on and that a counter screen, not the list, is open.
- Presses seem to be missed: press and release; very fast double presses under 0.12 seconds count once.
- Your volume changed after counting: the app set it to the middle when counting started. Adjust it once you leave the counter.
Questions and answers
Does it work with the screen off?
No. The counter screen has to be open and visible. With the screen locked, the buttons control the volume as usual.
Do both volume buttons count up?
Yes. Either button adds one; use the on-screen minus button or Undo to take one off.
Does it cost extra?
No. Counting with the volume buttons is part of the free version.
