People counter app: how to count people at an event with a clicker
At a door or an event, two coloured counters — In and Out, tapped as people pass — cover it: people inside is In minus Out. Give In a goal equal to capacity and it vibrates with Goal reached! when you hit it.
When a people counter clicker helps
Door staff, event volunteers, tour guides and teachers all need the same quick headcount at some point: how many came in, is the room full, did everyone get back on the bus. A phone clicker does what a mechanical hand tally does, minus the clicking noise, plus a log you can check later.
Set up In and Out counters
- On Counters, tap + and choose New Counter. Name it In.
- Optional: turn on Set a goal and set it to the venue's capacity. Tap Save.
- Add a second counter named Out, without a goal.
- Open In and tap the big button for each person who enters. Open Out for each person who leaves.
- If you count a group at once, long-press the big button for +5, +10 or Enter Amount….
There is no single counter that goes up and down for in and out. Use two counters and subtract.
Worked example
| Counter | Value |
|---|---|
| In | 212 |
| Out | 57 |
| People inside (In minus Out) | 155 |
Set a goal of 150 on In and the vibration fires with Goal reached! right on the 150th entry — it keeps counting past that, so the final total of 212 still shows up intact.
Count without looking at the screen
Turn on Count with volume buttons in Settings under Feedback. With the In counter open, either volume button adds one person, like the button on a hand tally. You can keep your eyes on the door.
Wearing an Apple Watch? Open the counter on the watch and tap its screen or turn the Digital Crown.
Check the log afterwards
History in the ... menu lists every click with its time, grouped by day, with the day's net change. That shows when the busy moments were, for example how many came in during the first hour.
Common mistakes
- Tapping the wrong counter. Give In and Out clearly different colours and icons. If you slip, Decrease takes one off.
- Resetting before you note the totals. Reset keeps the history, but there is no export, so write the final numbers down or take a screenshot.
- Counting on two phones. Each phone keeps its own counters; there is no sync between them. Two doors mean two people counting, then adding up.
