How much do you spend on cigarettes? Calculate it per day, month and year

Divide the pack price by the number of cigarettes in the pack to get the price of one cigarette, then multiply by how many you smoke. At 12.00 for 20, one cigarette costs 0.60, so 10 a day is 6.00 a day, 180.00 in 30 days and 2,190.00 in a year.

The formula

Price per cigarette = pack price ÷ cigarettes per pack. Cost per day = cigarettes per day × price per cigarette. For a month, multiply the daily cost by 30; for a year, by 365.

The weak point is not the maths. It is the number of cigarettes per day, which most people underestimate by about one a day, until they start logging. That is why the most useful figure comes from what you actually log, not from the preview.

How much does smoking cost per month and per year?

Swap in your own pack price: the numbers scale in a straight line. A pack twice as expensive doubles every column.

How do you calculate it in the app?

  1. Go to Settings, Cost Settings, Cigarette Costs.
  2. Enter Pack Price and Cigarettes Per Pack (1 to 50).
  3. Read the Cost Preview: Per Cigarette, Daily (10 cigs), Monthly (10/day) and Yearly (10/day).
  4. Check Currency: USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD or JPY. The default is your device region's currency.
  5. From now on, each cigarette you log adds to spent today on the Home screen.

With 12.00 and 20 per pack, the preview shows $0.60, $6.00, $180.00 and $2,190.00: the same figures as the 10-a-day row above.

Your real cost, from what you actually smoked

The preview assumes 10 a day. For your real figure, log for a week and open Stats. The Cost section shows Period Total, Daily Average, and a projection to Weekly, Monthly and Yearly.

Example: 7 Days logged as 14, 12, 13, 11, 10, 9, 8 at $0.60 each
Figure in StatsValueCalculation
Period Total$46.2077 cigarettes × 0.60
Daily Average$6.6046.20 ÷ 7
Weekly$46.206.60 × 7
Monthly$198.006.60 × 30
Yearly$2,409.006.60 × 365

Before logging, this smoker might have said "about ten a day", which is 2,190.00 a year. The log says 11.0 a day and 2,409.00 a year.

What trips people up

  • If you buy by the carton, enter the price you actually pay per pack.
  • If you roll your own, estimate how many cigarettes one pouch makes and enter that as Cigarettes Per Pack with the pouch price.
  • Treat Money Saved on Home as a motivator, not an exact figure: it assumes one full pack and one full e-liquid bottle every day since your quit date, so it usually runs high. The Stats Cost section is the one to trust.
  • The Currency setting changes the symbol, not the amounts, so re-enter prices if you switch currency.

Questions and answers

How much does a pack-a-day smoker spend a year?
Multiply your pack price by 365. At 12.00 per pack of 20 that is 4,380.00 a year, or 360.00 every 30 days.
Does the app include lighters or other costs?
No. It only multiplies cigarettes logged by the price per cigarette you set.
Can I see what I spent on a particular day?
Yes. In History, pick the Date and read Total Cost in the day's Summary. The free version shows the last 7 days.
