Cigarette & Vape Counter

How do I put a quit smoking widget on my iPhone?

Long-press the Home Screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget, search for Cigarette & Vape Counter and pick Smoke-Free Timer, Today's Count or Money Saved. The timer counts up from the last cigarette you logged, by the minute, and needs iOS 18.6 or later.

The medium Smoke-Free Timer works well on a second Home Screen page. It stays visible whenever you swipe past, without needing to open the app.

Three widgets and one control

What each widget shows (Home Screen only)
WidgetSizeWhat you see
Smoke-Free TimerSmallSmoke Free, the time since your last logged cigarette or puff, and and counting under it
Smoke-Free TimerMediumTime Smoke Free on the left; Today with today's count on the right, plus the money figure once it is above zero
Smoke-Free TimerLargeTime Since Last in big type, then a Today box and a Saved box
Today's CountSmallToday's number in large type (green at 0) with "cigarettes" or "puffs" under it
Money SavedSmallSavings and the amount, with saved so far
Quick Log (control)Control CenterA Log button that shows %lld today and adds one entry when you tap it

Adding it, step by step

  1. Log at least one entry first. Before that the timer widget only says Start tracking (or No data yet on the medium one). If you already quit, open Details, set Time to when you had your last cigarette, and save it.
  2. Touch and hold an empty spot on the Home Screen until the icons jiggle, tap Edit, then Add Widget.
  3. Search for Cigarette & Vape Counter, swipe through the sizes and tap Add Widget on the one you want.
  4. For the control, open Control Center, tap the plus in the top corner, Add a Control, and pick Quick Log.

Step 1 is easy to get wrong: setting a quit date in the app does not make the widget count from that date. It counts from your last logged entry, so a back-dated entry is the only way to give it a start.

How the timer reads, with real numbers

The widget rounds down and shows two units at most. The app's own Home card shows seconds; the widget does not.

Time since last logged cigarette and what the widget shows
Time since lastWidget text
50 min 40 s50m
2 h 5 min 59 s2h 5m
1 day 3 h 25 min1d 3h
3 days 23 h 59 min3d 23h

It moves on whole minutes. iOS decides exactly when a widget redraws, so once in a while it can sit a minute behind the app; opening the app pushes it straight back in line.

Can I add a widget to my Lock Screen?

Not a widget. There are no Lock Screen sizes in this version, only Home Screen ones. What you can do on iOS 18 is swap one of the two Lock Screen buttons (the flashlight or the camera) for a control, and Quick Log is a control. Mine sits where the flashlight was, so logging a cigarette is one press without unlocking.

A tap on Quick Log bumps the widget count at once, but the entry only lands in History the next time you open the app. Until then it waits in a queue. Nothing is lost, it just is not on the app screens yet.

Limits to know about

  • In Both mode the widgets show cigarettes only, and Quick Log adds a cigarette. If you mostly vape, set Tracking Mode to Vape and they switch to puffs.
  • The control has a Track Type option when you edit it, but it has no effect: the control follows the app's Tracking Mode.
  • Money Saved on the widget is the same figure as the Home card, and that figure runs high unless you fix two prices (the money guide shows how). The widget also shows a number even if you never entered a price; the app card asks you to tap Set my price instead.
  • The widgets need iOS 18.6 or later. The app itself runs on iOS 17, so on an older iPhone you get the app and no widgets.
  • No Apple Watch app or complication.

The widgets and the control are free, same as logging. The free version shows ads inside the app after the first 7 days; the widgets never show ads.

If you are cutting down rather than quitting, Today's Count is the better pick over the timer. Seeing "6" at lunch is more useful than seeing 2h 5m.

Questions and answers

Can I add a widget to my lock screen on iPhone?
Cigarette & Vape Counter has Home Screen widgets only. On iOS 18 you can put its Quick Log control in place of the flashlight or camera button on the Lock Screen, which logs one cigarette (or puff in Vape mode) per press.
Why is my widget not updating on iPhone?
The timer moves in whole minutes and iOS chooses when widgets redraw, so it can trail the app by a minute. Opening the app republishes everything and reloads the widgets. If it still says Start tracking, you have not logged an entry yet.
Is there a quit vaping app widget?
Yes, the same three widgets work for vaping. Set Tracking Mode to Vape and the timer counts from your last logged puff and Today's Count shows puffs.
Can I log a cigarette from the widget?
Not from the Home Screen widgets, which only display. Use the Quick Log control in Control Center or on the Lock Screen; the entry is added to the app the next time you open it.
