How much money have you saved since you quit smoking?
Multiply what you used to smoke a day by the price of one cigarette and by the days since you quit, then take off anything you smoked since. At 15 a day and 12.00 a pack of 20, ten days off cigarettes with one slip of 2 is 88.80 not spent.
Take someone who smoked about 15 a day at 12.00 a pack: the Money Saved card can show $368.80 after ten days, about four times too high. A couple of settings fix it in a few minutes.
The sum, without the app
Price per cigarette = pack price ÷ cigarettes in the pack. Not spent per day = cigarettes you used to smoke a day × that price. Multiply by the days since you quit, then subtract the cost of anything you smoked since.
| Since you quit | Not spent |
|---|---|
| 1 day | 9.00 |
| 1 week | 63.00 |
| 30 days | 270.00 |
| 1 year | 3,285.00 |
How the Money Saved card works it out
The app does not ask how much you used to smoke. It assumes your old day was one full pack plus one full bottle of e-liquid, whatever your Tracking Mode. Then: that daily amount × whole days since your Quit Date, minus the cost of every entry logged since.
So for a cigarettes-only smoker who never touched Vape Costs, the default e-liquid price of 25.00 is still in the daily baseline. That is where a figure like $368.80 comes from.
Worked example: making the figure honest
Same person in every row: quit 10 days ago, smoked 15 a day before, has logged one slip of 2 cigarettes (1.20) since.
| Settings | Daily baseline | Money Saved shown |
|---|---|---|
| Pack Price 12.00, Cigarettes Per Pack 20, Vape Costs left at 25.00 | 37.00 | $368.80 |
| Same, with E-Liquid Price set to 0 | 12.00 | $118.80 |
| Pack Price 9.00, Cigarettes Per Pack 15, E-Liquid Price 0 | 9.00 | $88.80 |
The third row is the trick. Enter your old daily amount as if it were a pack: 15 cigarettes, and what 15 cost you (0.60 × 15 = 9.00). The price per cigarette stays at 0.60, so spent today and the Stats cost figures do not change, and Money Saved now matches the hand sum.
- Settings, Cost Settings, Vape Costs: if you never vaped, type 0 in E-Liquid Price.
- Cigarette Costs: set Cigarettes Per Pack to how many you smoked a day, and Pack Price to what that many cost.
- Check Per Cigarette in Cost Preview: it must still match your real price per cigarette.
- Settings, Quit Date, I quit on: pick the real day. Set quit date to today is there if you are starting now.
- Back on Home, read Money Saved, labelled Total.
Daily and projected totals
Cost Preview under Cigarette Costs always shows 10 a day: with 12.00 for 20 that is Daily (10 cigs) $6.00, Monthly (10/day) $180.00 and Yearly (10/day) $2,190.00. If you smoked 15, add half again: 270.00 a month, 3,285.00 a year, the same as the first table.
One catch after the row-three trick: the preview still multiplies by 10, so with 9.00 for 15 it shows Daily (10 cigs) $6.00. For your own projection use the first table, not the preview.
Money milestones in Milestones (under Money) start at 10 and go up to 10,000 of the Money Saved figure. With the honest settings, our example passed 10, 25 and 50 by day 10; with the defaults it had already passed 250, and a number like that tells you nothing.
Before you install
- Money Saved stays at nothing until you have entered a price (it shows Set my price) and logged at least one entry. If you quit before installing, log your last cigarette with Details and a past Time.
- It cannot know your old habit. It only knows the two prices and the date you give it, which is why the fix above matters.
- Currency offers USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD and JPY. Changing it changes the symbol, not the amounts.
- Everything here is free: prices, the card, the Money Saved widget and Share (an image of the card once it is above 10). Premium removes ads after the first week and adds history older than 7 days.
It is worth installing mainly for the number sitting on the Home Screen every day. For a one-off sum, skip it. The first table and a calculator do the job.
