How to back up your loyalty cards and move them to a new iPhone
StoreCard keeps cards only on your iPhone, with no iCloud sync, so the one way to keep a copy is Export Cards in Settings. It writes every card to a single JSON file; on the new phone, Import Cards reads that file back in.
Why you need a backup
Keeping cards on the device is exactly what makes StoreCard work offline and without an account. The flip side: nothing lives anywhere else. Delete the app, lose the phone, or move to a new one without exporting first, and the cards are gone, which means re-scanning every card after an unplanned phone swap.
How do I export my loyalty cards?
- Open StoreCard and tap the gear button at the top left to open Settings.
- In Export & Import, tap Export Cards.
- The share sheet opens with a file named StoCards_Export.json. Save it to Files, send it to your computer, or AirDrop it to your new iPhone.
- You see Export Successful when the file has been created.
The file contains every card: name, company, code, barcode format, category, colours, notes, tags and dates. It is plain JSON, not encrypted, so treat it like the plastic cards themselves: anyone with the file can see your card numbers.
How do I move loyalty cards to a new iPhone?
- Export the cards on the old iPhone as above and put the file where the new phone can reach it, for example in Files or via AirDrop.
- Install StoreCard on the new iPhone.
- Open Settings and, in Export & Import, tap Import Cards.
- Pick the StoCards_Export.json file.
- The app confirms how many cards it brought in, for example "Successfully imported 12 cards."
| Item | In the export file? | After import |
|---|---|---|
| Cards: code, format, name, company | yes | ready to use |
| Colours, notes, tags, favourite status | yes | kept |
| Widget choices | no | pin again with Add to Widget and set up the widget |
| Pro upgrade | no | restored by the App Store on the same Apple ID, not by the file |
| App settings such as Theme | no | set them again |
Common mistakes
- Importing the same file twice, which just duplicates everything: import adds to what is already there rather than replacing it, so either delete the extras afterward or only import once into an empty app.
- Assuming the file keeps updating itself. It is a snapshot of the moment you exported it — a card added on the old phone afterward is not in there. Export again whenever you add cards.
- Picking a file that was never a StoreCard export: the app just says "That file couldn't be read as a StoreCard backup." and stops, nothing imported.
- Deleting the app before exporting, which is the one mistake with no fix — once the app is gone, its cards go with it.
