How to add loyalty cards to your iPhone
Open StoreCard, tap the camera button and point it at the card's barcode. The code and its format fill in on their own, you tap Add, done. If the barcode is worn or you only have a photo or the number, StoreCard can read a picture of the card instead, or let you type it.
Why put your loyalty cards on the phone?
A wallet with ten plastic cards in it means the one you need is often at the bottom. Once a card is in StoreCard, the till only needs its barcode, and the app draws that barcode on the screen itself. Scan it once and you can leave the plastic at home from then on.
StoreCard keeps the cards inside its own app, widget and Apple Watch app. It does not create Apple Wallet passes, so it also works for the many small shops, gyms and cafes that never offer one.
Which way should you add a card?
| Method | Where in the app | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Camera scan | camera button on the main screen, or Add Your First Card | any card with a clear barcode or QR code |
| Photo | photo button on the main screen | a picture you already took, or a card you no longer have |
| Typed | Enter Manually, or Manually Import + in Settings | worn barcodes, number-only cards, no camera |
How do I scan a loyalty card into my iPhone?
- Tap the camera button at the top of the main screen. The first time, allow camera access.
- Hold the card flat, in good light, with the barcode inside the frame. Tap the flashlight button if the room is dark.
- When the code is read, the New Card form opens with the Code and Barcode Format already filled in.
- Type the Card Name and Issuer/Company, and pick a Category.
- Choose a Background Color so you recognise the card at a glance, and switch on Favorite for the ones you use most.
- Tap Add.
The scan is processed on the iPhone. Nothing is uploaded, and the card is saved in a database on the device.
How do I add a card from a photo?
Tap the photo button next to the camera button and pick the picture. StoreCard looks for the barcode in the photo and reads the text on the card to suggest the store name, a category and the card's main colours. When it finds them, it can also fill in a member number and an expiry date printed on the card.
- Tap the photo button on the main screen and choose the photo.
- Wait while the app analyses the image.
- In the form, check every field. Under Detected Colors, tap a colour to use it as the card background.
- Tap Add.
If the photo has no readable barcode, you get an Analysis Failed message. Tap Retry with a sharper, flatter photo, or type the number instead.
How do I add a membership card that has no barcode?
- Tap Enter Manually under the camera view or on the empty list.
- Type the number from the card in the Code field.
- Pick the Barcode Format. Many European supermarket cards use EAN-13; long alphanumeric numbers are often Code 128.
- Fill in Card Name and Issuer/Company, then tap Add.
If the number does not fit the format you chose, the card shows the message "This number doesn't fit the selected barcode format, so it can't be drawn." and a Change Format button. Try another format until the barcode appears.
Tips and common mistakes
- Scan in daylight or with the flashlight on. Glossy cards reflect ceiling lights straight into the camera, which can take several tries to get a clean scan.
- Add notes or tags such as a PIN or a membership level. Search looks through names, issuers, notes and tags.
- Photo detection is a guess, not a lookup. A shop outside the app's built-in list, or a card with a busy design, can come back with the wrong name or colours.
- Data Matrix, the small square code on some cards, cannot be drawn by StoreCard at all — not a bug, just a format it does not support. Keep that card, or use the number if the till accepts it typed.
- Keep the plastic until the digital version has worked once at the till.
