Birthday countdown app: how many days until my birthday?
Create an event with the Birthday category and your next birthday's date, and the days, hours, minutes and seconds left just show up. A one-off birthday countdown is free. Making it roll over to next year by itself is the one part that isn't.
How many days until my birthday? Let the app count
Doing this math by hand is easy to get wrong — months run 28 to 31 days, leap years throw in an extra one, and it's easy to lose count somewhere in there. The app works straight off the two moments, so it's right no matter what the calendar's doing that month.
Set up the birthday countdown
- Tap + to open New Countdown.
- Tap the Birthday category to get a cake emoji, or type your own in Emoji if you would rather use something else.
- Type a Title, for example My birthday, or a friend's name.
- Pick your next birthday in the calendar. Turn on Include Time and set 12:00 AM if you want the countdown to end right at midnight.
- Tap Save.
Worked example: a March birthday
Birthday on Sunday, March 14, 2027, with Include Time set to 12:00 AM. New York time. The app counts the real seconds between now and then, keeps whole days, and splits the rest into hours, minutes and seconds.
| You check on | The app shows |
|---|---|
| Sat, Sep 26, 2026, 9:00 AM | 168 days 16 h 0 min 0 s |
| Mon, Mar 1, 2027, 12:00 AM | 13 days 0 h 0 min 0 s |
| Sat, Mar 13, 2027, 12:00 PM | 0 days 12 h 0 min 0 s |
| Sun, Mar 14, 2027, 12:00 AM | Completed |
16 hours in that first row, not 15 — easy to mistake for an error at first glance. Clocks fall back an hour on November 1, 2026, so the real gap between the two moments runs an hour longer than the clock faces alone would suggest. The app counts real time, not clock-face arithmetic.
Does the birthday come back every year?
Only if the event repeats. The Repeat row in the editor offers Never, Every Year, Every Month and Every Week. With Every Year, the first time you open the app after the birthday, the event moves to the same date next year and its reminders move with it.
Free plan means the event just sits at Completed once the day's gone. Resetting it is two taps: long-press the card, Edit, pick next year's date. For our example, that's Tuesday, March 14, 2028.
Keep friends' and family birthdays too
Each one's a separate event, and the free plan only stretches to 3 — a birthday, a partner's birthday and a parent's birthday can use up the limit on their own. Pro removes the cap. Favorite the ones you care about most and use the Favorites filter, or switch to timeline view to see them grouped by month.
Tips and common mistakes
- Enter the *next* birthday, not the birth date itself. A past date goes straight to Completed — no counting up here.
- A 7 days reminder buys you present-shopping time. One per event, free.
- A Lock Screen widget means checking without opening the app at all.
