How to set a countdown reminder on iPhone
Open the event, turn on Reminders, tap an offset like 1 day or 7 days, tap Save, allow notifications when iOS asks. It fires that long before the date and time, app closed or not.
When a reminder helps more than a number
A widget only tells you when you bother to look. A reminder taps you on the shoulder whether you looked or not — book the taxi, send the invitations, leave for the venue. Anything with a departure time attached is worth a reminder, since a missed one is easy to regret.
Steps: add a reminder to a countdown
- Create an event with +, or long-press an existing card and tap Edit.
- Make sure the date is right. Turn on Include Time and set the hour if the reminder should be relative to a specific time.
- Scroll to Reminders and turn the toggle on.
- Tap an offset chip: At event, 1 hour, 12 hours, 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 14 days or 30 days.
- Tap Save. The first time, iOS asks whether Countdown may send notifications; allow it.
Free plan, one chip per event — the rest show a lock and bounce you to the upgrade screen. Pro: all 8 on the same event, if you want them.
Worked example: every offset for one event
A concert on Friday, November 20, 2026 at 7:00 PM, New York time. Each reminder fires exactly its offset before the event, counted in real hours.
| Chip | Fires on |
|---|---|
| 30 days | Wed, Oct 21, 2026, 8:00 PM |
| 14 days | Fri, Nov 6, 2026, 7:00 PM |
| 7 days | Fri, Nov 13, 2026, 7:00 PM |
| 3 days | Tue, Nov 17, 2026, 7:00 PM |
| 1 day | Thu, Nov 19, 2026, 7:00 PM |
| 12 hours | Fri, Nov 20, 2026, 7:00 AM |
| 1 hour | Fri, Nov 20, 2026, 6:00 PM |
| At event | Fri, Nov 20, 2026, 7:00 PM |
That 30-day row: 8:00 PM, not 7:00 PM. Easy to assume that's a glitch — it's not. Clocks go back on November 1, between the reminder and the concert, and the app counts a flat 30 times 24 real hours back from the event. 720 hours before, no more, no less.
Why the reminder does not drift when you travel
Each reminder is scheduled as an interval, not a clock time, so a flight across time zones or a daylight saving change doesn't move it — a 1-hour reminder is always one real hour before the event, wherever you are when it fires.
Notification title is the event's emoji and title; the text reads something like 3 days until Nov 20, 2026, or Starting Nov 20, 2026 for At event.
Limits worth knowing
- A moment already passed just gets skipped. A 30 days chip on an event 10 days out does nothing at all.
- iOS caps an app at 64 waiting notifications. Countdown uses up to 60, soonest kept first.
- Reminders seem to go missing after a lot of edits? Reschedule All Reminders in Settings rebuilds the queue nearest-first.
- Denied notifications once? Flip them back on for Countdown in the iPhone Settings app — nothing arrives otherwise, no workaround inside the app itself.
