Countdown app: frequently asked questions
A couple of these answers contradict what the App Store page itself says — they reflect the current build, not the listing. The rest covers what actually happens when you set up events in the app. Each answer stands alone.
Do I need Pro to put a countdown on the Home Screen?
No. Every widget size works free — small, medium, large on the Home Screen, circular, rectangular and inline on the Lock Screen. Pro changes the app, not the widgets.
Does Countdown need an internet connection or an account?
No to both. Nothing to sign up for, nothing stored off the device. Counting, widgets and reminders all run offline; the connection only gets used to load ads and for purchases or restores.
What happens to a birthday once the day passes?
Set to Every Year, it jumps to the same date next year the first time you reopen the app, reminders and all. Here's the catch: that repeat option needs Countdown Pro right now, despite the store page listing it as free. Leave a birthday as a one-off on the free plan and it just sits at Completed until you go edit the date yourself.
How many reminders can one event have?
One free, eight with Pro: At event, 1 hour, 12 hours, 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 14 days, 30 days before. Pick one on the free plan and the rest just show a lock.
Can Countdown count up from a date that has already passed?
No, and this trips people up. It only counts down to something in the future — a past date just shows Completed, never elapsed time. So it's the wrong app for tracking days since an anniversary or a habit streak.
What language is the app in?
Whatever your iPhone's set to, as long as a translation exists for it. Change it in iPhone Settings and the app follows along.
How many events can I have for free?
Three. Hit that number and the + button and the Save button both bounce you to the upgrade screen instead of adding a fourth. Archived events still count toward the three, so delete something you don't need rather than just archiving it.
Does watching an ad give me a free extra event?
The upgrade screen advertises Watch ad for 1 free event — but the editor's Save button still enforces the 3-event cap regardless, so the ad doesn't reliably get you a fourth. If you need more than 3, Pro is the route that actually works.
Are repeating events free?
Not right now, no. Repeat — Never, Every Year, Every Month, Every Week — is locked on the free plan and taps through to the upgrade screen. The store listing says otherwise. Go by what the app does, not what the page claims.
Will a reminder still arrive at the right moment if I travel to another time zone?
Yes — each reminder is set as a fixed stretch of time before the event, not a clock time, so a flight across time zones or a daylight saving shift doesn't move when it fires. The notification's date comes from the event itself.
Is there a limit on how many reminders can be waiting?
There is. iOS caps an app at 64 pending notifications; Countdown uses up to 60 of them and always keeps the soonest. Got a pile of events with lots of reminders? Reschedule All Reminders in Settings rebuilds the queue nearest-first.
Why does the Lock Screen widget not tick every second?
Because it only refreshes once a day, at midnight, and that's by design — iOS budgets how often a widget can redraw, and one that asks too often gets throttled. Editing the event refreshes it immediately though. For a live seconds count, open the event in the app itself; the large Home Screen widget also carries a running timer line.
Which event does the widget show?
Your soonest non-archived event, by date. A passed event left sitting in the list shows as completed on the widget too, so archive or delete it to let the next one take over.
What does Countdown Pro unlock?
Unlimited events, up to 8 reminders each, repeating events, the Flip Clock, Circular, Progress Ring, Progress Bar, Digital and Elegant styles, the Animated, Stars and Particles backgrounds, a custom color wheel, no full-screen ads. Weekly, yearly, Lifetime — pick whichever, you get the same Pro.
How do I cancel or restore Pro?
Settings in the app, then Manage Subscription — that opens Apple's own screen, where a weekly or yearly plan gets cancelled. Restore Purchases checks the App Store for something you already bought, say on a new phone. Lifetime is a single payment; there's nothing to cancel on that one.
Can I sync my countdowns between my iPhone and iPad?
No. No account, no iCloud sync, no export — an event made on your iPhone just doesn't exist on the iPad. You'd have to create it again on each device.
Why does Countdown ask to track me?
It's about ad personalization in the free version, nothing more. Decline and every feature still works; ads just stop being targeted. The app has no analytics of its own and no server.
Can I delete all my countdowns at once?
Yes — Delete All Events in Settings, behind a confirmation. It wipes everything on the device at once, and there's no backup to pull it back from, so it's not a step to take lightly.
