Retirement countdown app for iPhone: how many days to go
Create an event with your last working day, turn on Include Time for your final hour, and it counts down in days, hours, minutes and seconds from there. For a date years out that's a number like 1,007 days — the app sticks to days, not years and months, so get used to the big figure.
Why a retirement countdown works
Three years out is an abstract idea on a calendar. A number dropping by one every morning is not, and watching it cross 1,000 or 500 is, honestly, kind of satisfying.
Set up your retirement countdown
- Tap + to open New Countdown.
- Tap the Work category for a briefcase emoji, or type your own in Emoji.
- Type a Title such as Retirement, and add your employer or role in Subtitle if you like.
- Pick your last working day. Turn on Include Time and set the hour you finish.
- Optionally turn on Reminders and pick 30 days.
- Tap Save.
What the countdown shows for a date years away
Every display style counts in total days plus hours, minutes and seconds. There is no years and months view: a retirement 2 years and 9 months away reads as a four-digit day count.
| You check on | The app shows |
|---|---|
| Sat, Sep 26, 2026, 9:00 AM | 1,007 days 8 h 0 min 0 s |
| Sun, Sep 26, 2027, 9:00 AM | 642 days 8 h 0 min 0 s |
| Tue, Sep 26, 2028, 9:00 AM | 276 days 8 h 0 min 0 s |
| Fri, Jun 1, 2029, 9:00 AM | 28 days 8 h 0 min 0 s |
It gets there by taking the real seconds left, keeping the whole days, truncating the rest — never rounding up, so it never over-promises.
Seeing how far you have come
Pro adds Progress Ring and Progress Bar, which show the share of the wait already behind you, measured from the day you created the event. Many people find this more motivating than the raw day count — created on September 26, 2026, the example above sits at 46% by January 1, 2028, 9:00 AM.
Reminders for a long countdown
30 days is as far out as a reminder offset goes — no 100-days marker, no yearly nudge, so a three-year countdown spends most of its life with reminders simply off. Free plan picks one offset; Pro allows up to 8, so 30, 14, 7 and 1 day before your last day, stacked.
Want earlier milestones? Make a separate event, maybe for the day you actually hand in your notice. Free plan caps you at 3 events total.
Keep it on your Lock Screen
The circular Lock Screen widget just shows the day count — plain, which suits a long countdown fine. Midnight refresh, one day fewer each morning.
Things to know
- No skipping weekends or holidays. It's calendar time, not a working-days counter.
- No counting up after the date. Last day arrives, event goes Completed, done.
- No sync at all. New phone means recreating the event by hand.
