Baby passport photo at home: can an iPhone app check it?

You can take a baby passport photo at home, import it, and have Passport Photo AI crop it to the country's size and flag head size, position, tilt and light. It has no infant mode, though, and it does not look at the eyes at all, so it will not tell you whether your office accepts a sleepy newborn.

The in-app camera is the front camera, built for selfies, and a baby cannot hold a phone. So someone takes the picture with the normal Camera app and you bring it in with Import. That is not obvious from the home screen.

Setting up the shot

Lay a plain white or off-white sheet flat, put the baby on it on their back, and shoot from straight above with the phone level. The usual trick is a parent kneeling over and one hand under the head, out of frame. Window light from the side, no flash. A newborn gives you a few seconds at a time, so take a burst and choose later.

The sheet becomes the background. In a US photo the app does not replace the background (current US rules reject AI-altered photos), so what you laid down is what is submitted. For most other countries the app swaps in the required colour; look at the edges of the head in the preview before you accept it.

Importing and reading the check

  1. Tap Create New Photo and pick the country and the document.
  2. Open the Import tab, tap Choose from Photos and pick the sharpest frame.
  3. On Photo Check, read the score and the Issues found list.
  4. If something is critical, go back and choose another frame from the burst; you rarely need a new session.
  5. Tap Use This Photo and export with Export Photo as JPEG, PNG or PDF.

What the check does and does not relax

Nothing is relaxed. The head-size range, the tilt limit of 8 degrees and the turn limit of 12 degrees are the same adult numbers, because the app has no baby setting. There isn't one in the app's code. If your authority publishes looser rules for infants, the app doesn't know them.

The app never looks at open or closed eyes, expression or an open mouth, so none of those cost points. That helps with a squirming baby. It also means a 90 on a photo with closed eyes says nothing about acceptance, and for babies that is the question that matters. Offices differ on it, so the answer is on your office's page, not here.

UK passport spec in the app, applied to a baby photo
ItemValue
Photo size35 x 45 mm
Pixels at 300 DPI413 x 531
Head height range29 to 34 mm, 342 to 401 px
Flagged if the head is smaller than29 / 45 = 64.4% of the photo height, less a 2% margin
Head tilt flagged above8 degrees
Head turn flagged above12 degrees

A flagged tilt or turn is usually the baby rolling the head toward a voice. Re-pick a frame and leave the editor alone.

Things that went wrong

  • A hand or a second face in the picture. The app refuses a photo with more than one face, so the parent must be out of frame, and a hand under the head should not reach the face.
  • Dark corners from a sheet that is creased or shadowed by the phone. The check reads the four corners, so smooth the sheet and light it evenly.
  • A head that is too small, from shooting far away. Move the phone closer. The app can crop but cannot add detail.

Questions and answers

Can I take a baby passport photo on my phone?
Whether a photo taken at home is accepted is up to the issuing office, and some have extra conditions for infants. Check yours first, then take the picture with the Camera app and bring it in with Import.
Does the app have a newborn or baby mode?
No. It uses the country's normal head-size and position limits, and it does not check eyes or expression.
What colour should a baby passport photo background be?
It depends on the country: the camera screen shows the required colour for the document you picked, and the app replaces the background where the rules allow. For US photos it never replaces it, so use a plain white or off-white sheet.
Can a baby passport photo have closed eyes?
That is the issuing authority's rule, not the app's. The app does not detect closed eyes, so a good score does not answer the question.
Is it free?
The check, the crop and exporting one photo are free. A banner ad is shown on the free version.
