Passport photo size requirements by country, in mm and pixels
There is no single passport photo size, and that trips people up more than anything else about this process. Most of Europe uses 35 × 45 mm (413 × 531 px at 300 DPI), the US and India use 2 × 2 inches (600 × 600 px), Canada uses 50 × 70 mm, Spain 26 × 32 mm (307 × 377 px). Passport Photo AI stores 63 specs for 55 countries and crops your photo to whichever one you pick.
What a passport photo spec contains
- Print size, in millimeters (or inches for the US).
- Head height from chin to crown, as a minimum and maximum.
- Resolution: every spec in the app uses 300 DPI, which gives the pixel size.
- Background color: White, Off-White / Cream or Light Gray in the current database.
- Rules on glasses, smiling and color, shown under Photo requirements in the app.

| Spain | Passport | 26 × 32 mm (2.6 × 3.2 cm) | 307 × 377 | 22–26 mm | White |
| Turkey | Passport | 50 × 60 mm (5 × 6 cm) | 590 × 708 | 34–42 mm | White |
| Saudi Arabia | Passport | 40 × 60 mm (4 × 6 cm) | 472 × 708 | 34–44 mm | White |
| Japan | Visa | 45 × 45 mm (4.5 × 4.5 cm) | 531 × 531 | 30–38 mm | White |
Many other countries in the app — Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Japan, South Korea, Mexico — use that same 35 × 45 mm size. The head height still shifts between them, anywhere from 27–36 mm to 32–36 mm. A matching print size does not mean a matching head range, so picking the right country's spec matters even when two look alike.
How to see a country's spec in the app
- Tap Create New Photo.
- Find the country under Suggested or All countries, or type in Search country....
- Each document card shows the print size, background and DPI, for example 35×45 mm · White · 300 DPI.
- Tap a document, then Photo requirements for the head height and rules such as no glasses.
- Take or import the photo; the app crops it so the head lands in the middle of the allowed range, then scales it to the exact pixel size.
Passport photo size in pixels: how it is calculated
The formula is pixels = DPI × millimeters ÷ 25.4, rounded down. For a UK passport photo that's 300 × 35 ÷ 25.4 = 413 px wide and 300 × 45 ÷ 25.4 = 531 px tall. For Spain, 307 × 377 px. You don't need to run this yourself — the export screen shows the final number before you export — but it's worth knowing why the pixel counts look so specific.
Digital photos for online applications
Online applications usually want a file, not a print. The JPEG and PNG exports carry the exact pixel size and the 300 DPI tag. One limit worth knowing: some portals cap the file at a maximum size in KB, or want their own pixel range, and the app has no setting for that. Check the portal's own rules before you upload.
Common mistakes
- Using a 2 × 2 inch photo for a 35 × 45 mm country, or the other way round. The shapes differ, so cropping by hand distorts the head height.
- Assuming every country has every document. Most countries in the app have a passport spec only; the document list shows exactly what exists.
- Treating the background as white everywhere. The UK and France specs use Light Gray; the US and Australia use Off-White / Cream.
