Passport photo background remover: a plain background without a studio
Passport Photo AI cuts you out of the photo and places you on the plain color your document needs — white, off-white or light gray — entirely on your iPhone, for free. One exception: US passport, US visa and Green Card photos, where it deliberately leaves the background exactly as you shot it.
When you need it
Not many homes have a plain white wall with even light sitting around. Doors, curtains, shelves, a shadow behind your head — any of those can get a photo rejected. Replacing the background fixes it without buying a backdrop.
How the background replacement works
After you take or import the photo, the app runs Apple's person segmentation on the device to pull you out of the background. It then drops you onto a flat color taken from the document's spec and applies a light brightness and contrast correction. None of this leaves the phone.
Does a passport photo background have to be white?
Not always. In the app's database most countries use White, the United Kingdom and France use Light Gray, and the United States, Australia and New Zealand use Off-White / Cream. The document card shows the color before you choose it, and the app uses exactly that color.
Steps in the app
- Tap Create New Photo and pick your country and document. Check the background tag on the document card.
- Take the photo with Take Photo, or use Import with a photo that has only you in it.
- Wait for the processing screen to finish; the background step runs automatically.
- Check the result on Photo Check. If the preview shows stray edges around hair or shoulders, often right at the collar, retake with more space between you and the wall.
- Tap Use This Photo and export.
Why it does not remove the background on US photos
The US Department of State rules from January 2026 reject AI-altered photos, and a replaced background counts as exactly that. For US passport, US visa and Green Card photos the app shows a notice and only crops and resizes — no shortcut around it. Shoot against a plain white or off-white wall instead; the check flags Background appears too dark. if the corners fall short of the spec.
Tips for a clean cut-out
- Stand a step or two away from the wall so your shoulders and hair have clear edges.
- Avoid a background the same color as your hair or clothes.
- Even light on your face matters more than the background: the app can replace a wall, not a shadow on your cheek.
- One person only. If a second face is visible, the app stops and asks for one person.
