Driver's license photo requirements: taking the photo yourself
Most licensing offices just photograph you at the counter — so before anything else, check whether you need to bring a photo at all. Driver's license requirements are set office by office, and Passport Photo AI has no dedicated license size. If yours asks for the same format as your country's passport photo, pick that Passport spec and let the app size and check it for you.
Do you need to bring a photo at all?
Check first: many offices take the driver's license photo on site, so no printed one is needed, and formatting one anyway is wasted effort. Others, mostly renewals by mail or online, ask you to supply one, and that's where a home photo earns its place.
What the app can and cannot do for a license photo
- It can: size a photo to any spec in its database, check head size, position, tilt, light and background, and export JPEG, PNG or PDF at 300 DPI.
- It cannot: offer a separate driver's license size. The document list for each country shows only what exists, and no country in the current database has a Driver's License entry.
- It cannot: check glasses or expression, which license rules often cover.
When the passport spec fits
If the office's instructions name the same size as your passport photo, the passport spec gives you a correctly sized file straight away — 35 × 45 mm (413 × 531 px) in much of Europe, 2 × 2 inches (600 × 600 px) in the US. Compare the office's size against the document card before you shoot, not after.
Steps
- Read your licensing office's photo instructions and note the size, background and file rules.
- In the app, tap Create New Photo, pick your country and compare its Passport card with those instructions.
- If they match, take the photo and read Photo Check. If they do not match, use the app's check only as practice for light and position.
- Export with Export Photo, or print several copies with Print Sheet (Pro, or once with an ad).
Driver license photo tips that apply everywhere
- Face a window or soft light so there are no shadows on one side of the face.
- Keep your head level and look straight at the lens; the app flags tilts over 8° and turns over 12°.
- Take off hats and sunglasses unless the office says otherwise.
- Stand in front of a plain, light wall.
