Green Card photo requirements, and how to make one on your iPhone

Passport Photo AI's Green Card spec is 2 × 2 inches, 600 × 600 pixels at 300 DPI, head 25–35 mm, plain off-white background — the same numbers as its US passport spec. Like the US passport, it gets no AI background edit: the app only crops and resizes your photo.

Are Green Card photo requirements the same as a passport?

In the app, yes: the Green Card entry under the United States uses the same size, head height, background and resolution as the Passport and Visa entries. Still read your USCIS form's own instructions — the app sizes the photo, not the form, and the form decides how many copies you need and how to label them.

Steps to make a Green Card photo

  1. Tap Create New Photo, pick the United States and tap Green Card.
  2. Tap Photo requirements and follow them: no glasses of any kind, neutral expression, mouth closed, no hats.
  3. Stand in front of a plain white or off-white wall with soft, even light and take the photo, or Import one someone took of you.
  4. Read Photo Check and fix any critical issue with Retake Photo.
  5. Tap Use This Photo. For prints, use Print Sheet with 4×6 inch (most common): 6 photos fit on one print.

Why the background must be real

Because the Green Card spec counts as a US document under the January 2026 rule against AI-altered photos, the app leaves your wall exactly as it is — a dark or patterned wall stays right there in the photo. The check reports Background appears too dark. when the corners fall below the off-white level, which is your cue to move or add light, not to rely on a fix later.

Common mistakes

  • Wearing glasses: the app does not detect them, and the Green Card spec does not allow them.
  • Using a beauty filter or portrait lighting mode, which counts as altering the photo.
  • Scaling the print. Print at actual size so the photo measures exactly 2 inches.
  • Relying only on the score. A photo scored OK at 80 can still carry a critical issue sitting in the list underneath it.

Questions and answers

What is the Green Card photo size in pixels?
The app exports 600 × 600 pixels, which is 2 × 2 inches at 300 DPI.
Can I take my Green Card photo at home?
You can take and format it at home with the app. Whether a home photo is accepted depends on USCIS rules, so check them first.
Does the app edit my face or background for a Green Card photo?
No. For the Green Card spec it only crops and resizes; it skips background replacement and the automatic brightness correction.
