How to make a collage of screenshots on iPhone
Open the Templates tab, pick Story Grid, add four screenshots and save at 2K: you get one 1,152 x 2,048 px image with each screenshot at about half its original width. The catch is that every slot crops its screenshot, so a tall phone capture loses a strip at the top and bottom.
3 Rows puts three screenshots side by side. The name is backwards from what it suggests (3 Columns is the stacked one), and worse, the slots are squares. A 1,179 x 2,556 px screenshot shows only its middle 46%, cutting a chat into three slices with no context. Fine for photos. Wrong for screenshots.
Pick a layout with tall slots
A screenshot is tall, about 0.46 wide for every 1 high. You want a layout whose slots are tall too. Story Grid (a 2x2 grid on a 9:16 canvas) is the closest match: each slot is also 9:16, so the screenshot only loses the top and bottom.
- Open the Templates tab and find Story Grid in the social layouts. Its small crown is only a badge, the layout is free.
- Tap the photo-plus icon at the top. The picker is Apple's own, so the Screenshots album sits under Albums. Select four screenshots.
- If one slot is wrong, tap it and choose a different picture. Drag inside a slot to slide the screenshot, pinch to zoom it.
- Tap the share icon, choose Quality, then Save to Photos or Share.
What the crop takes, and what the pixels look like
Slot ratio is 9:16 = 0.5625, the screenshot is 0.4613. The screenshot fills the slot's width and shows 2,096 of its 2,556 rows, which is 82%. The 230 rows trimmed at the top and at the bottom cover the status bar and the home indicator strip, plus a little content beyond them. If the line you need is at the very top, drag the screenshot down inside its slot.
| Quality | Whole image | Each slot | Screenshot size kept |
|---|---|---|---|
| HD (free) | about 608 x 1,080 | about 304 x 540 | 26% |
| 2K (free) | 1,152 x 2,048 | 576 x 1,024 | 49% |
| 4K (Pro) | 2,304 x 4,096 | 1,152 x 2,048 | 98% |
At HD the small text in a screenshot shrinks to a quarter of its size and becomes unreadable without zooming. At 2K it is readable, so 2K is the floor: nothing lower. Only 4K keeps the screenshot near full size.
More than four
Once you have saved a collage, the Gallery tab shows a Quick Collage banner at the top (on a fresh install the Gallery is empty and sends you to Templates). It takes up to 9 pictures and picks the layout itself, so do not expect Story Grid: four screenshots get a mosaic, and nine get the 3x3 grid. That grid makes square tiles, 360 px at HD and 683 px at 2K, about 58% of the original width at 2K, and each tile shows only the middle 46% of a screenshot. That grid is better suited to a run of app screens than to messages.
Before you install
Free: all layouts, HD and 2K, no watermark, nothing uploaded, no account. The free version shows ads, and an interstitial plays after every third export. Pro adds 4K and removes the ads. If you just need two screenshots joined once, a Shortcuts action called Combine Images can do it with no app, though it gives you no layouts, rounded corners or captions.
