How to remove the background from a photo on iPhone

Place the photo in a layout, tap it, tap Remove BG — the cutout happens on the device, nothing leaves your phone. Export as PNG with Transparent Background on to keep that transparency. Both need Pro; if you just want a quick free cutout, iOS 16's Photos app already does a rougher version of the same trick.

Can you remove the background of a picture on iPhone?

Yes, and it's Apple doing the heavy lifting either way — Vision framework finds the main subject and separates it from everything behind it. Touch and hold a subject in Photos and it lifts out as a sticker you can copy; CollageCraft uses the same detection but keeps the cutout inside a design instead of handing you a floating sticker.

That's really the whole difference. Photos gives you something to paste elsewhere. CollageCraft lets you drop the cutout onto a colour, gradient or pattern, add text around it, and export the whole thing as a finished image or a transparent PNG.

How to remove a background with CollageCraft

  1. Open Templates and pick a layout; a single-photo grid works well if you just want the cutout.
  2. Tap Tap to add and choose your photo.
  3. Tap the photo to select it. The per-photo tools appear at the end of the toolbar.
  4. Tap Remove BG. After a moment the background disappears and the subject stays in the slot.
  5. Tap BG to put a colour, gradient or pattern behind it, or leave it plain.
  6. Tap the share icon to open Export, choose PNG under Format, and switch on Transparent Background.
  7. Tap Save to Photos. The PNG keeps its transparency when you open it in another app.

Does it need internet, and is it private?

No. It runs entirely on the iPhone or iPad, works in airplane mode, and the photo never touches a server. Needs iOS 17 or later, same as the app overall.

How good is the cutout?

Honestly as good as what Apple ships in Photos, since it's the same detection underneath. One clear subject, it's very good. A few situations still give it trouble:

  • Cleanest results: one person, pet, product or plant that stands out from a plainer background.
  • Harder: wispy hair or fur against a similar colour, glass and see-through objects, and busy scenes.
  • When several people or objects stand in front, the app keeps all of them together as the subject.
  • If nothing is found, the photo stays as it was. Tap Undo to go back after any cutout you don't like.

What the cutout is good for

  • A product on a clean colour background for a listing or a shop post.
  • A pet or a person over a gradient for a birthday or profile collage.
  • A transparent PNG dropped straight into a presentation, a design app or a sticker.

Where this trips people up

  • Exporting as JPEG and expecting transparency. JPEG always fills the background in; pick PNG.
  • Leaving Transparent Background off, so the collage's own background gets saved behind the subject anyway.
  • Cutting a tiny subject out of a wide shot. Crop or zoom in first so it fills most of the slot.

Questions and answers

Is background removal free?
No, Remove BG sits behind Pro. If you just need one quick cutout and nothing more, iOS 16's Photos app does it free with a touch-and-hold.
Does it upload my photo to remove the background?
No. It's made on the device with Apple's Vision framework, and it works with zero connection.
Can I save the result with a transparent background?
With Pro, yes: PNG, then Transparent Background on, in the Export sheet, before you save.
What if the cutout cuts off part of the subject?
Undo brings the original back. Then try a photo with more contrast between subject and background — there's no manual brush here for touching up an edge by hand.
