Steps not counting in a shopping cart or stroller basket: why, and how to add them
The phone counts steps from its own bounce and swing. Resting in a stroller basket or a shopping cart, it barely moves with your stride, so it misses them. A 25-minute loop of the supermarket with the phone in the basket can register almost nothing; a pocket next time, and the walk already done goes into Step As.
Why are steps not counted when pushing a stroller?
A step counter looks for the up-and-down rhythm of walking. A phone on your body feels it with every step. A phone lying in a stroller basket rolls along smoothly on wheels, so there is almost no rhythm to detect.
A watch has a similar problem when the wrist it is on holds the handle: the arm stops swinging. The same goes for a shopping cart with the phone in the child seat.
How to make it count next time
- Carry the phone in a trouser or jacket pocket instead of the basket or cup holder.
- If you wear a watch, push with the other hand when you can, so the watch arm keeps its motion.
- Take a moment at the start to check that the step count is rising.
Step As does not change how the phone or watch counts. It only adds the steps they missed.
How to add the missed steps to Apple Health
- Estimate the walk: count your steps for one minute while pushing, then multiply by the minutes you walked.
- Open Health and look at today's steps. If the phone counted part of the walk, subtract that from your estimate.
- In Step As, tap the Quick Log button that matches, or tap Custom Amount and set the wheel.
- Free version: tap Watch Ad in the Limit Reached alert and let the video finish.
- Open the History tab later and check This Week: today's bar includes the walk.
Worked example: a 25-minute stroller walk
That supermarket loop again: counting 110 steps in one minute over a 25-minute walk gives 110 × 25 = 2,750 steps. The wheel moves in steps of 100, so pick a value close to it.
| You pick | Walk length | Steps written | Distance written |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2,500 | 30 min | 2,500 | 2,500 m |
| 2,700 | 32 min | 2,666.67 | 2,666.67 m |
| 2,800 | 34 min | 2,833.33 | 2,833.33 m |
| 3,000 | 36 min | 3,000 | 3,000 m |
The 2,500 Quick Log button is the fastest option and is written exactly. 2,700 and 2,800 are written as the steps of 32 and 34 whole minutes at the app's internal pace, a little under and over what you picked.
A few things to watch for
- Log on the same day, soon after the walk. Each entry ends at the moment you tap and cannot be moved to an earlier time or day in the app.
- The steps count toward your step total only. They do not add Apple Watch Move or Exercise ring credit.
- Health distance for the log is 1 metre per step, which is usually more than a stroller walk covers.
- Made a mistake? Delete the Step As entry under Steps in the Health app; the app itself has no undo.
