Why does Apple Health show the wrong walking distance?
The walking distance Step As writes to Apple Health is not measured — it is 1 metre per step. That number tends to read higher than a GPS-tracked walk over the same distance, because real strides are usually shorter than a metre.
Why the distance looks off
Step As only asks you for a step count, never a distance. When it writes that count to Apple Health, it also writes a walking + running distance sample, using a fixed internal model: 1 step = 1 metre, at a walking pace of 5 km/h. It has no way to know your real stride length, so it does not try to guess it.
Most adult strides land somewhere under a metre, so if you compare this distance with a GPS-tracked walk or a pedometer that measures stride, Step As will usually look a bit generous. The step count itself is exactly what you chose; only the distance figure is a model.
How the app gets from a step count to a distance
Tap a Quick Log button (500, 1,000, 2,500 or 5,000) or open Custom Amount and pick a count with Pick your step count, then Log %@ Steps. The app turns that number into whole minutes of walking at its 5 km/h pace, then writes the steps and the distance for those minutes — so the distance always matches the step count one-to-one, in metres.
| Steps logged | Minutes written | Distance written to Health |
|---|---|---|
| 500 | 6 | 500 m (0.5 km) |
| 1,000 | 12 | 1,000 m (1.0 km) |
| 2,500 | 30 | 2,500 m (2.5 km) |
| 5,000 | 60 | 5,000 m (5.0 km) |
| 7,300 | 88 | 7,333.33 m (7.333 km) |
| 20,000 | 240 | 20,000 m (20.0 km) |
20,000 steps is the largest single Custom Amount log; for more, log again.
What this means for your totals
- The step count Apple Health shows for a Step As entry is exact — it is the number you picked.
- The distance for that same entry is the 1-metre-per-step model, not a measurement, so treat it as a rough figure rather than your real walking distance.
- This only affects the distance number. The step total, your daily goal ring, streak and badges in Step As are all driven by steps, never by distance.
