Daily step goal tracker: set a goal and keep your streak
Set your goal in Settings under Goals & Streaks, watch the ring on Home fill with today's Apple Health total, and every day you reach it adds one to your streak. Setting the goal close to your real daily average, rather than leaving the default 10,000, makes the streak easier to keep alive.
How to set your daily step goal
- Open the Settings tab.
- Under Goals & Streaks, use the stepper next to your goal in steps. It moves in steps of 1,000, from 1,000 to 50,000.
- Go back to Home: the ring now measures today's total against the new goal.
The ring counts every step in Apple Health for today, not only the ones you log in Step As. A normal day with the phone in your pocket counts in full. At 6,200 steps on a 10,000 goal the ring is 62% full; at the goal it turns green.
What should my daily step goal be?
Start from what you really walk. The History tab shows your last seven days in This Week; a goal a little above your usual day is one you can reach often, and a streak rewards reaching it often. Raise it by 1,000 at a time when it gets easy.
How the streak works
A day counts once your Apple Health total for today reaches the goal while the app is open. Step As checks when you open it, when you come back to it and after each log. Consecutive counted days raise the streak; after a gap, the next counted day starts again at 1.
| Day | Health total | Counted | Streak | Top streak | Goal days |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | 12,000 | yes | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Tuesday | 10,500 | yes | 2 | 2 | 2 |
| Wednesday | 11,000 | yes | 3 | 3 | 3 |
| Thursday | 4,000 | no | 3 | 3 | 3 |
| Friday | 10,200 | yes | 1 | 3 | 4 |
On Thursday the goal was missed, yet the ring still shows 3 for that day: a broken streak keeps its old number until the next day you reach the goal. On Friday it restarts at 1. The top streak stays at 3 and the goal days reach 4.
Badges in the Awards tab
The Awards tab holds 12 badges in three groups. Locked ones show a progress bar.
- Streak Milestones: a 3, 7, 30 and 100-day top streak.
- Goal Days: First Goal, 10 Goal Days, 50 Goal Days and 100 Goal Days, days on which you reached the goal.
- Steps Logged: 10K Steps, 100K Steps, 500K Steps and 1M Steps, counting only the amounts you logged with Step As.
The evening reminder
In Settings, under Reminders, switch on Daily Streak Reminder. iOS asks for notification permission the first time. You then get one notification every day at 20:00. The time is fixed, and it arrives even on days you already reached your goal.
See the month at a glance
The Streak Calendar in History shades the last 30 days by how close each came to your goal, and shows how many active days you had. The goal you set is the yardstick for its colours.
