Log steps to Apple Health with one tap using Quick Log in Step As

Tap 500, 1,000, 2,500 or 5,000 under Quick Log and Apple Health gets the steps in one go, no wheel to turn. The 2,500 button covers a typical dog walk taken while the phone sat out on the hall table instead. Free users watch one short video per log first.

Can you add steps to Apple Health manually?

Yes. Apple Health accepts step entries from apps you allow, and it labels each entry with its source. The Health app also has its own Add Data option on the Steps page, where you type a number, a date and a time.

Step As is quicker when the walk just happened: one button instead of a form, the distance filled in for you, and a goal ring that shows the new total straight away. The Health app's own Add Data screen is easy to forget it even has.

When you need it

  • The phone was charging, on your desk or in a locker while you walked.
  • You walked on a treadmill with the phone on the console.
  • You pushed a stroller or shopping cart with the phone in the basket.

In each case the steps were real, but the iPhone could not feel them. It counts only what it is carried for.

How to add steps with Step As

  1. First launch: on the Sync Your Streak to Health page tap Continue, then allow Steps and Walking + Running Distance in the Health sheet. If you tapped Not now, the app asks again at your first log.
  2. On Home, tap 500, 1,000, 2,500 or 5,000 under Quick Log.
  3. For another number, tap Custom Amount. In the Custom sheet, turn the Pick your step count wheel (100 to 20,000, in steps of 100) and tap the button below it, for example Log 7,300 Steps.
  4. Free version: the Limit Reached alert opens with Watch Ad and Go PRO. Tap Watch Ad and let the video finish; the steps are written when it grants the reward.
  5. Done: a haptic tap, a check mark on the ring, and today's total rises.

If Health refuses the write, an Apple Health alert explains why and offers Open Settings, so you can switch Steps back on for Step As. Nothing is counted as logged in that case.

What gets written to Health? A worked example

Each log becomes one step entry and one distance entry, stamped as a walk that ends at the moment you tap. The app converts your number to whole minutes at a fixed internal pace and writes the steps for those minutes, with 1 metre of distance per step.

What Step As writes for each amount
You pickWalk lengthSteps writtenDistance written
5006 min500500 m
1,00012 min1,0001,000 m
2,50030 min2,5002,500 m
5,00060 min5,0005,000 m
7,30088 min7,333.337,333.33 m
1001 min83.3383.33 m

All four Quick Log amounts and every multiple of 500 come out exact. Other wheel values are rounded to a whole minute first, so 7,300 is written as 7,333.33 steps and 100 as 83.33.

Does it overlap earlier logs?

No. A new log never starts before midnight and never overlaps what Step As already wrote today. Log 5,000 steps at 10:00 and the entry covers 09:00 to 10:00. Log 2,500 more at 10:10 and they are squeezed into 10:00 to 10:10, still all 2,500 steps. This keeps Health from treating your logs as duplicates.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Log soon after the walk. The entry always lands on today, ending now; you cannot choose a past day or time in Step As.
  • Check Health first if the phone was with you part of the time, and log only the missing part. Overlapping minutes from different sources may be merged.
  • Prefer multiples of 500 when your estimate allows it, so the number in Health matches the one you picked.
  • Do not rely on the Health distance for a logged walk. At 1 metre per step it usually reads more than you walked.
  • Logged the wrong amount? Step As has no undo. Delete the entry in the Health app, under Steps, where Step As is listed as the source.
  • Logged steps do not fill Apple Watch Move or Exercise rings, because the app writes no workout.

Questions and answers

How do I add steps to the Apple Health app without typing a form?
Use an app that writes to Health. In Step As you tap a Quick Log amount or choose one under Custom Amount; the steps and matching distance appear in Health as a Step As entry.
Why does Health show 7,333 when I picked 7,300?
The wheel value is turned into whole minutes of walking (88 minutes for 7,300) and the steps for those minutes are written. Pick a multiple of 500 to get an exact number.
Can I add steps to an earlier day?
Not in Step As — every log ends at the moment you tap. For an earlier day, use Add Data on the Steps page of the Health app, which lets you set the date and time.
