Is there a pedometer app that works without a watch?
Your iPhone is already one: it counts steps on its own and saves them in the Health app, no Apple Watch needed. Step As fills the gaps, the walks the phone was not carried for, by writing a number you pick into Apple Health.
To be blunt, the App Store is full of step counters that just read the same Health number back to you. If all you want is a count of the steps you walked with the phone in your pocket, open Health, tap Steps, and you are done. No download.
Where the phone alone falls short
It counts only when it is on you. A phone that sat on the desk during a 25-minute walk to the bakery and back means that walk does not exist in Health. A phone in a pushchair basket, on a treadmill console or charging in the kitchen misses the same way.
That is the gap Step As is for. It does not sense motion at all, so it is not a pedometer in the strict sense. You decide the number, it writes the entry, and anything that reads steps from Apple Health sees it.
A normal day with no watch
Say the goal in the app is 8,000, set under Settings in the Goals & Streaks stepper, which moves in 1,000s from 1,000 to 50,000. By late afternoon the phone had counted 5,640.
- Right after the walk, open Step As. The ring on Home reads 5,640 of 8,000.
- Under Quick Log, tap the 2,500 button, a reasonable estimate for 25 minutes at an easy pace.
- Free version: Limit Reached opens. Tap Watch Ad and wait out the video.
- The ring jumps to 8,140, turns green, and today counts toward the streak.
| Steps | Ring | |
|---|---|---|
| Counted by the iPhone | 5,640 | 70.5% |
| Quick Log 2,500 (30 min window) | +2,500 | |
| Apple Health total | 8,140 | full, green |
The 2,500 entry is stamped as 30 minutes of walking ending at the tap. That is why it's best to log right after the walk: if the phone had been in your pocket during those 30 minutes, Health could merge the two sources and the total would rise by less than 2,500.
One thing that can be confusing at first is the alert. It says Limit Reached on the very first log of the day, which sounds like a cap. There is no cap. It is the free-log prompt, one video per log, and if no video loads (offline, say) the steps go through anyway.
Who this fits, and who should skip it
- Fits: you carry an iPhone most of the day, have no watch, and lose steps to the times you leave the phone behind.
- Fits: you like a daily goal ring, a day streak and badges built on your real Health total, not only on what you add by hand.
- Skip it if you want live counting with GPS, pace or calories. Step As has none of that, and the Health app already shows the live count.
- Skip it if your goal is to pad your steps for a challenge. It will write any number, and that number then means nothing to you.
It runs on iPhone and iPad and needs no account. A separate Step As ME app is on Google Play for Android phones, built from another codebase, so its features may differ.
Free or paid
Nothing costs extra: logging, the ring, the History tab, the streak and the 12 badges all sit in the free app. Go PRO (monthly, or a one-time Lifetime) and all that changes is the ads and the per-log video disappear. Staying on the free version makes sense unless you log every single day.
