How do I get my pedometer's steps into Apple Health on iPhone?
A plain clip-on pedometer has no Bluetooth, so there is nothing to pair: you read the number off its screen and type it in. In Step As that is one wheel, Custom Amount, from 100 steps upward in steps of 100 up to a maximum, and the entry lands in Apple Health.
An old belt pedometer works well on days when the phone stays in a locker. It is good at counting and useless at sharing: its number never reaches Health on its own, so a weekly chart can show a lazy Tuesday even after an afternoon of walking.
Do not log the whole display
If the phone was on you for part of the day, Health already has those steps, and the pedometer counted them too. Log only the difference, or you add them twice.
- In the evening, read the pedometer — say it shows 8,437.
- Open the Health app, tap Steps, and read today's total — say it shows 3,210, all from the iPhone.
- Subtract: 8,437 − 3,210 = 5,227. That is what the phone missed.
- Reset the pedometer, so tomorrow starts at zero.
Typing it into Step As
- On Home, tap Custom Amount.
- Turn the Pick your step count wheel to 5,200. It moves in 100s, so 5,227 is not on it.
- Tap Log 5,200 Steps.
- On the free version, Limit Reached comes up: tap Watch Ad. With PRO the entry is written straight away.
- Glance at the ring: it now reads Health's new total for today.
The wheel value is not quite what gets written. Step As turns the count into whole minutes at a fixed internal pace and writes the steps for those minutes, so only multiples of 500 come out exact.
| Wheel value | Minutes stamped | Steps written to Health | Health total after |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5,000 | 60 | 5,000 | 8,210 |
| 5,200 | 62 | 5,166.67 | 8,376 |
| 5,300 | 64 | 5,333.33 | 8,543 |
5,200 lands closest to the real 8,437. The ring drops the decimals, which is why it shows 8,376.
A big day over 20,000
One log tops out at 20,000. On a hiking day, say the pedometer read 23,480 and the phone had 1,950, a gap of 21,530. Logging 20,000, then 1,500, places the second log right before the first in the timeline instead of on top of it, because the app never overlaps its own entries, and Health shows 23,450.
What does not work
You cannot back-date. Every entry ends at the moment you tap, today. Forgetting one evening means the pedometer resets itself at midnight, and that day stays short in Health history. Log before you go to bed.
Log at a quiet moment too. The entry covers the minutes just before the tap (62 of them for 5,200), and if the phone was walking around in your pocket during that hour, Health may merge the two and add less than you logged.
Distance is written as 1 metre per step, so 5,200 steps also add 5.17 km of walking distance in Health, whatever your real stride. And there is no list of your entries inside the app; you correct a typo by deleting the sample in the Health app.
Every feature is free, no feature locked behind a paywall, but each log costs you one short video first. Pay once for Lifetime or monthly for PRO and the video is gone, nothing else changes. Worth doing if you read a pedometer every evening and want the History chart, goal ring and streak to match it.
