How to track steps you walked without your phone
Nothing counts your steps without a phone or watch on you. Count your steps for one minute, multiply by the minutes you walked, and log the result in Apple Health with Step As.
Can you track steps without a phone or watch?
Not automatically. The iPhone counts steps from its own motion, so it records only the time it is on you. If it stayed on the charger while you walked the dog, that walk is missing from Health.
What you can do is estimate honestly and add the result afterwards. Step As turns that estimate into a Health entry in a few taps.
How to count steps without your phone
Time-based counting works well enough for a walk you did at a steady pace:
- On your next walk, count your steps for one minute at your normal pace. That is your cadence.
- Note how many minutes the walk without the phone lasted.
- Multiply cadence by minutes. That is your estimate.
- Round it to a value the app offers (multiples of 100), ideally a multiple of 500 so it is written exactly.
Example: counting 105 steps in one minute and walking for 40 minutes gives 105 × 40 = 4,200 steps. It is a rough number, and it does not need to be any better than that.
Log the walk in Apple Health with Step As
- Open Step As on Home.
- For 500, 1,000, 2,500 or 5,000 steps, tap that Quick Log button. For anything else, tap Custom Amount, set the wheel and tap Log 4,200 Steps (the button shows your number).
- Free version: in the Limit Reached alert, tap Watch Ad and let the short video finish.
- Check the ring: today's total now includes the walk.
| You pick | Walk length | Steps written | Distance written |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4,000 | 48 min | 4,000 | 4,000 m |
| 4,200 | 50 min | 4,166.67 | 4,166.67 m |
| 4,500 | 54 min | 4,500 | 4,500 m |
4,200 is not a multiple of 500, so the app rounds it to 50 whole minutes and writes 4,166.67 steps. Since your figure is an estimate anyway, you can also pick 4,000 or 4,500, which are written exactly.
Several walks in one day
Log each walk separately. Every log ends at the moment you tap, and the app never overlaps its own earlier logs that day: 5,000 steps logged at 10:00 cover 09:00 to 10:00, and 2,500 more logged at 10:10 fill 10:00 to 10:10.
Just after midnight the window is clipped at 00:00. 5,000 steps logged at 00:20 cover 00:00 to 00:20 and still count in full, on the new day.
Common mistakes
- Waiting until tomorrow. Step As always logs on today, ending now, so log yesterday's walk in the Health app's own Add Data form instead.
- Logging a walk the phone partly recorded. Check Health first and add only the part that is missing.
- Guessing high. An estimate inflated by a few thousand steps makes your own trends and goal less useful.
- Reading the distance as real. The app writes 1 metre per step, so 4,000 steps show as 4 km.
