How to merge, split, reorder or compress a PDF on iPhone
Open PDF Tools, pick Merge, Split, Reorder or Compress at the top, choose the file or files, tap Run, then Preview or Share the result. All of it happens on your iPhone or iPad — nothing goes to a server.
Which tool do you need?
| Tool | What it does | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Merge | Joins two or more PDFs in the order you set | One PDF |
| Split | Breaks a PDF into single pages | One PDF per page |
| Reorder | Moves pages into a new order | One PDF |
| Compress | Redraws pages as JPEG images at a chosen quality | One PDF, text not selectable |
PDF Tools is a Pro feature, worth it if you touch PDFs often. Need each page as an image instead? PDF to Images (also Pro) saves one PNG per page, named page_001.png, page_002.png and so on.
How to merge PDFs on iPhone
- Tap PDF Tools on the Home tab and choose Merge.
- Tap Select PDFs and pick two or more files. The screen reads Select two or more PDFs to merge until you do.
- To change the order, tap Edit at the top and drag the files with the handles.
- Tap Run. The pages are joined in list order.
- Tap Preview to check it, or Share to save it to Files or send it.
How to split a PDF into pages
- Choose Split and tap Select PDF.
- Tap Run. Each page becomes its own PDF file.
- Tap Share Split PDFs to save all of them to Files or send them.
How to reorder PDF pages
- Choose Reorder and tap Select PDF. The pages appear as a list: Page 1, Page 2 and so on.
- Tap Edit and drag the pages into the order you want.
- Tap Run, then Preview or Share.
This is also the fix when Photos to PDF scrambles your photos into a different order than the one you tapped.
How to compress a PDF on iPhone, and what it costs you
- Choose Compress and tap Select PDF.
- Set Quality between 30 and 90 % in steps of 10; the default is 70 %. Lower means smaller and blurrier.
- Tap Run, then compare the result with Preview before sending it.
Pages get redrawn at their own size, capped at 2000 points on the longest side. A Letter page (612 × 792 pt) keeps its size and turns into one JPEG at whatever quality you chose.
Tips
- Merge first, then compress — that way you lose text selection exactly once, and on purpose.
- Results sit inside the app until you share them. Use Share to actually put a copy in Files.
- To print the result, share it into Files and open it with Print Document, or use Batch Print if you've got several files with different page ranges.
Questions and answers
Can I merge PDFs on iPhone for free?
Not in Printer App — PDF Tools needs Pro. Without it you can still print PDFs and build PDFs from photos for free.
Are my PDFs uploaded to a server?
No. Merge, split, reorder and compress all run on your own device, nothing leaves it.
Why did my compressed PDF get bigger?
Compress stores every page as a JPEG picture. A text-heavy PDF is already compact, so turning pages into images can actually bloat it. Save compression for scanned or photo-heavy files.
Can I split only certain pages?
Split always makes one file per page — there's no range option built in. To keep a range, split and share only the pages you need, or print a range directly with Batch Print.
