How to print one picture across multiple pages as a poster
Open Poster Print, tap Select Image, pick a Grid Size of 2×2, 3×3 or 4×4 and an Overlap, then tap Print Poster (4 pages) (or 9 or 16). Each page carries one tile with a small row-and-column label, so you can tape the sheets into one poster afterward.
When to use a tiled poster
A classroom display, a birthday banner, a map, a pattern you need bigger than one sheet allows. A home printer only puts out one page at a time, so the picture gets cut into tiles, each printed as large as a page allows.
How to print a poster on multiple pages, step by step
- Open Printer App and tap Poster Print on the Home tab.
- Tap Select Image and pick a photo. Change Image swaps it later.
- Under Grid Size, choose 2×2 (4 pages), 3×3 (9 pages) or 4×4 (16 pages).
- Set Overlap between 0 and 20 mm; the default is 10 mm. The overlap repeats a strip of the picture on neighbouring tiles. As the app puts it: Overlap area helps align pages when assembling.
- Check the preview, then tap Share / Save PDF and look at the PDF before you use 16 sheets of paper.
- Tap Print Poster (4 pages) (the number follows your grid) and print on plain Letter or A4 paper.
How big will the poster be?
Each tile scales to fit a US Letter page (8.5×11 in). The finished size is roughly the number of columns times the printed tile — these are nominal numbers before your printer's own margins shrink things slightly, and before you trim off the overlap.
| Grid | Pages | Landscape photo (4032×3024) | Portrait photo (3024×4032) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2×2 | 4 | 17 × 12.75 in | 16.5 × 22 in |
| 3×3 | 9 | 25.5 × 19.12 in | 24.75 × 33 in |
| 4×4 | 16 | 34 × 25.5 in | 33 × 44 in |
With the default 10 mm overlap on a 2×2 landscape poster, each tile grabs about 2109 × 1605 pixels of the photo instead of 2016 × 1512, and prints roughly 8.5 × 6.47 in on the page.
How to put the pages together
- Lay the pages out by their labels: each one reads Page n/N with its row and column in small grey text.
- On every tile except the last column, trim the right edge; on every tile except the last row, trim the bottom edge.
- Slide each trimmed edge over the overlap of the neighbour until the picture lines up.
- Tape on the back, row by row, then join the rows.
Common mistakes
- Starting from a small image. A screenshot or a web picture goes soft fast at 4×4 — use the original photo, not a downloaded copy.
- Printing on A4 when the tiles are built for Letter. iOS scales them down, so the finished poster comes out a touch smaller than the table above says.
- Setting Overlap to 0 mm to save paper — don't. Tiny printer margin differences leave white gaps you can't hide without it.
