How to print from iPhone to a printer
Open Printer App, tap Print Document (or Print Photo for a picture), pick the file and choose your printer in the standard iOS print sheet. Works with any AirPrint printer that's powered on and sitting on the same Wi-Fi as your iPhone.
What you need before you print
- A printer with AirPrint. Most Wi-Fi printers from HP, Canon, Epson and Brother sold in the last decade have it — check the box, the manual, or the printer's own settings menu.
- The printer switched on, awake, and on the same Wi-Fi network as the iPhone.
- The file already on your iPhone or iPad: in Files, iCloud Drive or another provider for documents, in Photos for pictures.
No driver, no cable. Your phone finds AirPrint printers on its own, and Printer App just uses that same system — nothing to install.
How to print a PDF from iPhone, step by step
- Open Printer App. The Home tab, titled Print Center, shows all the print jobs.
- Tap Print Document. The Files picker opens.
- Pick a PDF, RTF or plain-text file. One file at a time.
- The iOS print options appear. Choose your printer, the number of copies and, if you want, a page range. Any extra options depend on your printer model.
- Tap print in the top corner. The file is copied into History so you can print it again later.
For a picture, tap Print Photo instead and pick one photo from your library — paper size and layout get chosen in that same iOS print sheet.
Which files can you print this way?
| You want to print | Use | Free or Pro |
|---|---|---|
| PDF, RTF or TXT file | Print Document | Free |
| One photo | Print Photo | Free |
| Several photos, one per page | Photos to PDF, then Print | Free |
| A paper document | Scan Document | Free |
| Word, Excel or PowerPoint file | Office to PDF, then print | Pro |
| Many files with page ranges and copies | Batch Print | Pro |
Why won't my iPhone print to my printer?
When the printer doesn't show up in the print options, it's almost always the network or the printer at fault, not the phone. Work through these in order:
- Wake the printer up. Printers sleep and drop off Wi-Fi more than people expect; press a button or print a test page from its own panel.
- Check the network name. Phone and printer need the same network — a guest network, split 2.4/5 GHz names, or a mobile hotspot will quietly keep them apart.
- Confirm the model actually supports AirPrint. If it doesn't, retrying won't help, ever.
- Restart the router, the printer and the phone, in that order, if it used to work and just stopped.
Printer App has these same checks built in. Open Settings, tap Troubleshooting, and it steps through Try AirPrint First, Check WiFi Connection (shows whether your phone even has a Wi-Fi address) and Check Printer Power.
What the Advanced tab can and cannot do
The Advanced tab, labeled For printers without AirPrint support, offers Scan for Non-AirPrint Printers and Add Printer Manually. Both find devices on your Wi-Fi and show an IP address, and Test Connection just checks whether the printer's port answers.
Here's the part worth being blunt about: finding a printer isn't the same as printing to it. The app only sends jobs to AirPrint or IPP printers. Anything that speaks only Raw (port 9100) or LPD gets listed but never actually prints.
Tips and common mistakes
- Trying to open a .docx with Print Document — it only takes PDF, RTF and TXT. Convert first with Office to PDF, or export a PDF from whatever app made the file.
- Expecting Printing Defaults in Settings to change a normal print. They only touch Batch Print; set color, duplex and copies in the iOS print sheet instead.
- Reprinting the same monthly form by hunting down the file again, instead of just tapping its printer icon in History.
- You can also print straight from the Files app's Share button, skipping this app entirely — Printer App adds the history and the extra tools, but for a one-off PDF, Files is just as fast.
