What Passport Photo does, and what it does not

It crops your photo to the format's width-to-height ratio, then packs as many copies onto the paper as fit, with a 10 mm margin, 3 mm gaps and faint dashed cut lines. There are 21 presets — US Passport and US Visa at 2×2 in (51×51 mm), EU/Schengen at 35×45 mm — plus a Custom size in millimetres, 10 mm minimum.

How to print a 2×2 photo at home, step by step

  1. Take the photo against a plain, light wall in even daylight, face centred and with room above the head. Keep the camera at eye level, about an arm's length away or further.
  2. In Printer App, tap Passport Photo on the Home tab.
  3. Tap Gallery to pick the photo, or Camera to take one with the front camera. Under Your Photo you can tap Change Photo or Retake.
  4. Under Photo Format, choose your country's preset, or Custom and type Width (mm) and Height (mm).
  5. Under Paper Size, choose 4×6 in, Letter (8.5×11) or A4 (210×297mm). The app shows how many fit, such as 12 photos per sheet, and a Sheet Preview.
  6. Tap Print Passport Photos, or Share / Save PDF to print it later or at a photo kiosk.
  7. In the print options, choose the same paper size you loaded and print at actual size, without any fit-to-page scaling.

How many passport photos fit on 4×6, Letter and A4?

Why only two 2×2 photos on a 4×6 sheet? The app keeps that 10 mm margin on every edge so a home printer doesn't clip the photos, which only leaves room for one 51 mm column on a 4 in wide sheet. Want more US photos per print? Switch to Letter or A4.

How the automatic crop works

The crop keeps the full width or height of your picture and trims the rest evenly on both sides. A normal portrait iPhone photo at 3024×4032 pixels keeps a 3024×3024 square for the 2×2 in format, trimming 504 pixels off the top and bottom. For 35×45 mm it keeps 3024×3888 and trims just 72 pixels off each end.

Cutting and checking the photos

  • Measure one photo with a ruler before cutting anything. A 2×2 must come out at 51 mm (2 in) per side — smaller than that means the print got scaled somewhere.
  • Use whatever photo paper your printer recommends, glossy or matte, and give the ink a few minutes to dry.
  • Cut along the dashed guides with a craft knife and a metal ruler. Scissors tend to curve the edges, which matters more than you'd think on a passport photo.
  • Hang onto the PDF from Share / Save PDF so you can reprint the sheet later without redoing the crop.

Questions and answers

Is Passport Photo free?
You get one free use. After that it needs Pro, which also covers collages, posters, OCR and the PDF tools.
Can I print passport photos on 4×6 photo paper?
Yes — choose 4×6 in under Paper Size and load 4×6 paper. That gets you 2 US 2×2 photos or 4 at 35×45 mm per sheet.
Does the app remove the background?
No. There's no background removal, whitening or face detection at all. Stand against a plain, light wall when you take the photo instead.
Can I use a size that is not in the list?
Yes. Pick Custom and type the width and height in millimetres, 10 mm and up.
Will a photo printed at home be accepted?
That depends on your country's rules and the photo itself, not on this app. It only sizes and tiles the image, so check the official requirements separately before you print.
