How to print a Word document from iPhone

Print Document only opens PDF, RTF and plain-text files, so a .docx has to get converted first. Tap Office to PDF (Pro), pick the Word file, and print the PDF it spits out from the preview.

Why you can't just tap Print Document on a .docx

Print Document only takes PDF, RTF and plain text. A Word file has to become a PDF before it can go anywhere — Office to PDF handles that conversion on the device, and it also covers .pptx and .xlsx files along the way.

Office to PDF is Pro-only, no free trial run included. If you don't have Pro, the free path is to export a PDF from whatever made the Word file in the first place — Word, Pages and most mail apps have a "save as PDF" option somewhere — then open that PDF with Print Document, which is free.

How to print a Word document from iPhone, step by step

  1. Open Printer App and tap Office to PDF on the Home tab.
  2. Pick the .docx, .doc, .rtf, .pptx or .xlsx file from Files, iCloud Drive or another file provider.
  3. Wait while the file converts on the device. A PDF preview opens.
  4. From the preview, share it to Files or Mail, or send it straight to print.
  5. In the iOS print options, choose your printer, the number of copies and a page range, then print.

Worked example: a 7-page Word document, 3 copies

Once the document's a PDF, the sheets you burn through depend on single-sided or duplex printing, picked in the iOS print sheet. For a converted 7-page document printed 3 times:

Duplex Long Edge12

Duplex uses 9 fewer sheets for the same 3 copies — the ceiling of 7 pages over 2 sides, times 3, against plain 7 times 3. Whether your printer even offers duplex depends entirely on the model, so check before you plan around it.

What can go wrong

  • A converted page that looks cut off or squeezed usually means the original used a non-Letter page size; it gets rendered onto US Letter regardless.
  • Save the attachment from your mail app into Files first — that's what makes it show up in Office to PDF's file picker at all.

Questions and answers

Can't print a Word document from iPhone — what's wrong?
You probably tried Print Document, which only opens PDF, RTF and TXT. Convert the Word file with Office to PDF (Pro) first, or export a PDF from whatever app made it and print that for free.
How do I print a Word document from an email on iPhone?
Save the attachment to Files from your mail app, then open it with Office to PDF in Printer App — or use your mail app's own print option if it has one.
Can I print a Word document from my iPad the same way?
Yes, same screen, same steps. Printer App runs identically on iPad.
Can I edit the Word document before printing it?
No. Office to PDF only converts and prints the file as it stands; there's no text editor anywhere in the app.
