How many steps in a marathon?
At the 0.762 m stride Fit as uses, a 42.195 km marathon is 55,374 steps, a half marathon 27,687 and a 10 km race 13,123. Your own count moves with your stride: the longer each step, the fewer of them.
These numbers come up often the evening after a half marathon when the phone spent the race in the bag drop. The race existed, Health had no idea, and the number it should have shown is worth knowing.
| Race | km | miles | Steps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marathon | 42.195 | 26.22 | 55,374 |
| Half marathon | 21.0975 | 13.11 | 27,687 |
| 10 km | 10 | 6.21 | 13,123 |
The formula is metres divided by 0.762: 42,195 / 0.762 = 55,374.02, and the decimals are dropped, the same as the app does. 26.2 miles, the rounded figure people search for, is 42,164.8 m and comes out at 55,334 steps.
Why your number will be different
One stride for everyone is the weak spot. Fit as uses 0.762 m per step whether you walk or run, and you cannot change it: Stride Length under Settings is read-only, with no way to enter a personal running stride.
| Stride per step | Steps in a marathon |
|---|---|
| 0.762 m (Fit as) | 55,374 |
| 0.9 m | 46,883 |
| 1.0 m | 42,195 |
| 1.2 m | 35,162 |
Running steps are usually longer than walking steps, so if you ran the race, the app's count is likely on the high side. If you walked it, it may be close or even low. Measure your own stride over a known distance if the exact figure matters to you.
How do I log a race the phone missed?
Use Log Workout in Insights, not the Home tab. Home always files a walk under today, ending at the moment you tap, takes distance only in 0.5 km steps and caps the duration at 300 minutes. A race from Sunday cannot go in there, and 42.195 is not one of its distances.
- Open Insights and tap Log Workout.
- Under Activity Type, pick Running, or Walking if you walked it.
- Set Date to the start time, for example Sunday at 9:00 AM.
- Set your finishing time in minutes on the stepper below it. A 4:12 marathon is 252 minutes. The stepper starts at 30 and moves one minute per tap; holding + speeds it up for a large value like this.
- Type 42.195 in Distance (km). This field takes all three decimals.
- Tap Save Workout.
Health gets a Running workout from 9:00 to 1:12 PM with 42.195 km on it, plus 55,374 steps spread over those four hours. The sheet never shows the step figure. Workout History shows the row as 42.20 km · 6.0 min/km, 4h 12m.
If your watch or phone recorded part of the race as a workout that started in that window, the save is refused with A workout already exists for this time period. Delete the partial one in the Health app first, or log only the part it missed.
The Home tab, if the race was today
You can use it, with compromises. In Distance & Duration the closest distance is 42.0 km, which shows Estimated: 55118 steps, and the time must be a multiple of 5 minutes. It writes steps plus Walking + Running Distance, but no Running workout. Pick one screen, never both, or the steps count twice.
Limits before you install
- Steps are calculated from distance, not measured. No GPS, no motion sensor, nothing recorded during the race.
- Kilometres only. Type 42.195, not 26.2.
- A Log Workout entry does not add to Health's Walking + Running Distance total; the distance sits on the workout.
- The Log Workout sheet is free with no ad. In the free version, Step List blurs every day except today, so checking the steps of a past race day there needs PRO.
