How many steps is a 1 hour walk, or 30 minutes of walking?
An easy hour at 12 min/km covers 5 km, about 6561 steps. Walk the same hour at a brisk 10 min/km and it is 7874 steps instead; 30 minutes at that pace is 3937. Fit as works all of this out from the time and pace you type, and can log it to Apple Health if you want it kept.
Why time alone is not enough
Thirty minutes could be 2.5 km or 5 km depending on how fast you went, and the step count swings just as much. You need time and pace together. Pace is minutes per kilometre; speed in km/h is 60 divided by the pace.
The calculation is: distance = time / pace, then steps = distance / 0.762 m, the stride Fit as uses.
Steps for a 30-minute and 1 hour walk
| Time | Pace | Preview (distance · speed) | Estimated steps |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 min | 12.0 min/km (easy) | 2.50 km · 5.0 km/h | 3280 |
| 30 min | 10.0 min/km (brisk) | 3.00 km · 6.0 km/h | 3937 |
| 30 min | 6.0 min/km (running) | 5.00 km · 10.0 km/h | 6561 |
| 60 min | 12.0 min/km (easy) | 5.00 km · 5.0 km/h | 6561 |
| 60 min | 10.0 min/km (brisk) | 6.00 km · 6.0 km/h | 7874 |
| 60 min | 7.5 min/km (jog) | 8.00 km · 8.0 km/h | 10498 |
Easy, brisk and jog are descriptive labels for the table above, not something the app shows you. If you actually know your pace, from a watch, a treadmill or a timed route, use that number instead and skip the guessing.
How to work it out and log it in Fit as
- Open the Home tab and pick Walking (or Running).
- Choose Duration & Pace.
- Set Duration (5 to 300 minutes, in 5-minute steps) and Target Pace (3 to 20 min/km, in 0.5 steps). The default pace is 12.0 min/km.
- Read the preview line, for example 2.50 km · 5.0 km/h, and Estimated: 3280 steps below it.
- To save the walk, tap Log Walking — 3280 Steps. In the free version, choose Watch Ad in the Log This Walk prompt.
Nothing is written until you tap the Log button, so you can also use the screen just to check a number.
A quick pace to km/h converter
The preview line doubles as a converter: speed = 60 / pace. 12.0 min/km is 5.0 km/h, 10.0 min/km is 6.0 km/h, 7.5 min/km is 8.0 km/h and 6.0 min/km is 10.0 km/h.
Tips and common mistakes
- Count only moving time. A one-hour outing with 15 minutes of stops is a 45-minute walk.
- Guessing your pace too fast inflates the steps. If unsure, use the easy pace or switch to Distance & Duration when you know the route length.
- Running uses the same 0.762 m stride, so running steps are usually overestimated; the distance is still right.
- The app is metric only: 3 mph is about 4.8 km/h, roughly a 12.5 min/km pace.
