How do I log a run I did without my phone?

A run with the phone left at home leaves nothing in Apple Health on its own. Open Insights > Log Workout, pick Running, set the date, start time and duration, add the distance, and it saves a real Running workout with steps worked out from that distance. The Home tab logs the same run faster but only writes steps and distance, no Running workout entry.

Why log a run you did without your phone?

A phone can only record a run it travels with, full stop. Fit as fills the gap afterwards, from what you already know about the run.

  • You left the phone at home or in a locker and ran a known route.
  • The battery died partway through.
  • You ran with a dedicated running watch that is not an Apple Watch, and want the run in Apple Health too.
  • You want a past run in your Apple Health history, not just a number in your head.

Does the Home tab save it as a run?

No. The Home tab's Running choice only changes the button and confirmation text. What actually reaches Apple Health from the Home tab is a step-count sample and a walking + running distance sample, ending now, today. If you want an Apple Health entry that is a Running workout, with its own date and start time, use Log Workout in Insights instead.

How to log a real Running workout in Fit as

  1. Open the Insights tab and tap Log Workout.
  2. Under Activity Type, pick Running.
  3. Under Details, set Date to when you actually ran. The picker stops at the latest start that still ends by now.
  4. Set the duration, for example Duration: 35 min.
  5. Under Metrics (Optional), type Distance (km), for example 7, and Calories (kcal) if you know them.
  6. Tap Save Workout. The run is in Apple Health as a Running workout.

Quicker, but steps-only: the Home tab

If you only want the steps and distance counted today and do not care about a Running workout entry, Home > Running > Distance & Duration is faster. For 9.0 km in 55 minutes it shows 9.00 km · 9.8 km/h and Estimated: 11811 steps; tapping Log Running — 11811 Steps writes those steps and that distance to Apple Health right away, dated today.

Limits worth knowing before you install

  • No GPS route and no pace splits: you type one duration and, optionally, one distance.
  • Kilometres only; convert miles first (1 mile = 1.609 km).
  • No Apple Watch app. The run is logged by hand in Fit as whatever device, or no device, you ran with.
  • The Log Workout sheet writes steps for Running but no separate walking + running distance sample; the Home tab writes that distance but not a Running workout. They are two different Apple Health entries.
  • No edit after saving: fix a wrong value in the Health app.

Questions and answers

Can I track a run with just my iPhone?
Only while the phone moves with you, using its own motion sensors and apps that read them. If the phone was not on you, or its battery died, that run is simply not recorded, and Fit as cannot sense it after the fact either, but it can save the run from the distance and time you remember.
What if the phone's battery died during the run?
Use whatever distance and time you know, from a route you recognise or a running watch, and enter them in Log Workout. Fit as writes the Running workout for the time range you set, even though the phone recorded none of it.
Does Fit as need a running watch to log a run?
No. Log Workout only needs the date, start time, duration and, if you know it, the distance. No watch, GPS or sensor of any kind is read by Fit as.
Will the run show up with a route map?
No. Fit as has no GPS and saves only the numbers you type, so there is no map or pace-per-kilometre split, only the overall duration and distance.
