Steps per km by stride length: the 0.762 m calculator in Fit as
1 km is 1312 steps, 5 km is 6561 steps, 10 km is 13123 steps. That is what you get from a 0.762 m stride, which is exactly what Fit as uses: it shows the estimate before you log anything, then writes it to Apple Health if you tap Save.
The formula
Steps = distance in metres divided by stride length. With a 0.762 m stride (2.5 feet), 1000 m / 0.762 m = 1312.3 steps. Fit as drops the decimals and shows whole steps: 1312.

How many steps in a km walking vs running?
The real number depends on your stride. Taller people and runners cover more ground per step, so they take fewer steps per km; shorter walkers take more. A fixed stride cannot know this, and Fit as uses the same 0.762 m for walking, running and hiking.
For example, walking a known 100 m and counting 128 steps works out to roughly a 0.78 m stride, a touch longer than the app's fixed number. If you want your own figure, walk a known distance, count your steps and divide. Fit as will not let you plug that number back in, though, so it stays your own side calculation.
Use Fit as as a km to steps calculator
- Open the Home tab and choose Distance & Duration.
- Set Distance (0.5 km and up, in 0.5 km steps). The line Estimated: 6561 steps updates as you change it (5.0 km in this example).
- If you only want the number, stop here: nothing is saved until you tap the Log button.
- If you really walked it, set Duration too and tap Log Walking — 6561 Steps to write the steps and distance to Apple Health.
To see the stride the app uses, open Settings > Units & Stride: Stride Length reads 0.762 m / step and Distance Unit reads Kilometers. Both are read-only.
What about miles?
Fit as works in kilometres only. Convert miles first: 1 mile = 1.609 km. On the Home tab distance moves in 0.5 km steps, so a 3-mile walk (4.83 km) is closest to 5.0 km there; for an exact distance, use Log Workout in Insights, which accepts decimals.
