Swimming workout tracker: how do I log a swim in Apple Health?

There is no waterproof sensor doing anything here. Open Insights > Log Workout, pick Swimming, set the date, start time and duration, add the distance and calories if you know them, and Fit as saves it as a real Swimming workout in Apple Health.

Fit as is not an automatic swim tracker

No water-resistance checks, no stroke detection, no lap counter. You tell it a swim happened and when, and it writes that to Apple Health afterwards, the same way it handles a walk you typed in by hand. It does not automatically detect a swim, and it never claims to.

What a swim entry in Fit as holds

  • Activity Type set to Swimming.
  • Date: the day and start time you actually swam.
  • Duration: how long the swim lasted, 1 to 1440 minutes.
  • Distance (km), optional: the total distance, if you know it, as one number in kilometres.
  • Calories (kcal), optional: a whole number, if you know it.

There is no field for pool length, lap count, stroke type or rest intervals. If your swim app or watch gives you those, Fit as cannot hold them; only the total distance and duration go in.

How to log a swim in Fit as

  1. Open the Insights tab and tap Log Workout.
  2. Under Activity Type, pick Swimming.
  3. Under Details, set Date to when you swam and the duration, for example Duration: 35 min.
  4. Under Metrics (Optional), type Distance (km), for example 1.5, and Calories (kcal) if you know them.
  5. Tap Save Workout. The swim is saved as a Swimming workout in Apple Health.

No ad, no PRO check on this sheet. Logging swims costs nothing, however many you add.

Worked example: a 1,500 m pool swim

Activity TypeSwimming

Duration35 min
Distance (km)1.5
Saved in Apple HealthSwimming workout, 35 min, 1.5 km
Row in Workout History1.50 km · 23.3 min/km, 35m

That 23.3 min/km figure is simply duration divided by distance (35 / 1.5), the same formula Fit as uses for every workout type. It is not a per-100 m pace, so read it as a rough overall figure, not a swim-specific metric.

Does a logged swim add steps?

No. Fit as only turns distance into steps for Walking, Running, Treadmill and Hiking. A Swimming workout keeps the duration, distance and calories you typed, with no step-count sample added, which matches how little a step means in a pool.

Limits worth knowing before you install

  • Manual only: no motion sensing, no waterproofing checks, no automatic lap or stroke detection.
  • One distance number in kilometres; no per-length splits, stroke breakdown or SWOLF.
  • No Apple Watch app: whatever device you swam with, the entry is typed into Fit as by hand afterwards.
  • No edit after saving: fix a wrong value by deleting the workout in the Health app and adding it again.
  • Workout History and the Insights cards read any user-entered workout in Apple Health, from any app, not only Fit as.

Questions and answers

Can you add swimming to Apple Health without a watch?
Yes. Log Workout in the Insights tab lets you pick Swimming and type the date, duration and, optionally, the distance and calories; no watch or sensor is needed.
How do I add swimming to the Apple Health app?
Apple Health itself has no quick way to type a workout. In Fit as, open Insights, tap Log Workout, choose Swimming, fill in the details and tap Save Workout; it lands in Apple Health as a Swimming workout.
What apps can track swimming automatically?
Fit as is not one of them: it has no sensors and tracks nothing on its own. It is for adding a swim you already know happened, with its real date, duration and distance, after the fact.
Can I log open water swimming too?
The Activity Type list has one Swimming option, with no separate pool or open-water setting. Log the date, duration and distance the same way for either.
