How many steps a day on the Camino de Santiago, and how do I log a stage my phone missed?

A typical 20 to 25 km stage comes to about 26,000 to 32,500 steps at 1,300 steps per km, the walking rule PokeT-Walk uses. If your iPhone was off or buried in the backpack that day, you can add the stage to Apple Health by distance or by step count, dated the day you walked it, up to 7 days back.

Take a 22 km day where a phone spends the morning switched off in the lid of the pack to save battery. Health might show only a couple of thousand steps for the whole day. The stage can be added that night in the albergue, going in as 28,600 steps and 22 km, from 08:37 to 13:30.

Steps for a day's stage at 1,300 steps per km, and the time Custom Walk writes at 4.5 km/h

The whole Camino Francés from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is roughly 780 km, which the same rule turns into about 1,014,000 steps. Steep descents shorten the stride, flat farm track lengthens it, and the app has no height or stride setting.

Why the phone misses whole stages

Battery is the usual reason. The other is where the phone rides: in a hip-belt pocket or the top of the pack it rocks with the load instead of swinging with your legs, and the count comes out short.

The phone cannot count that day afterwards. You can only add it yourself.

Adding the stage with Custom Walk

  1. On Home, open Ended at and pick the date and the time you reached the albergue.
  2. Tap Custom Walk. Slide Distance to the stage length (22.0 km) and Pace to your walking speed (4.5 km/h).
  3. Read Summary: for a 22 km stage at 4.5 km/h it shows 28,600 steps and 293 min.
  4. Tap Add to Health. The entry shows as 22.0KM in History, and Open Health takes you to Apple Health to see it.

Custom Walk stops at 25 km, so a 30 km day to Sarria does not fit in one entry. Split it at the lunch stop instead: 18 km ending at 11:30 (23,400 steps, 240 min, from 07:30) and 12 km ending at 15:00 (15,600 steps, 160 min, from 12:20).

Ended at goes back to now after every log. Forgetting to set it again means the second half lands just before the moment you tap. Undo it from History and log it again.

No PRO? Two free ways

Custom Walk is part of the optional PRO upgrade. On the free version, multiply the stage by 1,300 and type the result into Custom amount: 22 km becomes 28,600 steps. Tap Add, watch the short ad, done.

Spread over makes no difference at this size. With Natural Pace on (the default), 28,600 steps need at least 260 minutes at 110 a minute, longer than 3 hours, so the app writes 260 one-minute samples of 96 to 124 steps, 09:10 to 13:30, and exactly 22 km of distance.

The distance buttons also work. 22 km is 7KM plus three 5KM, four ads. Set Ended at to 13:30 before each tap and the app stacks them backwards, each one just before the last: 11:45 to 13:30, 10:30 to 11:45, 09:15 to 10:30, 08:00 to 09:15. Same 28,600 steps, at the buttons' fixed 4 km/h.

What it will not do on the Camino

  • It does not go back further than 7 days. Log each stage within the week, ideally that evening.
  • It counts nothing. It writes what you enter, and Health lists PokeT-Walk as the source of every entry.
  • Kilometres only, 0.5 km at a time in Custom Walk. A 22.3 km stage goes in as 22.0 or 22.5, or type 28,990 steps into Custom amount.
  • Each entry stays inside one calendar day and is never dated in the future.
  • The This Week chart in Statistics files entries under the day you tapped, not the day of the stage. Three stages logged on Sunday show as one tall Sunday bar there, even though Health has them on the right days.
  • If the phone counted part of the stage, add only the missing part, or Health ends up with that stretch twice.

If you carry the phone in a trouser pocket and keep it on all day, skip all of this, you do not need it. It is only for the days the phone was off or buried in the pack.
