Forgot to wear my Apple Watch: can I add the steps?
Yes, into Apple Health, though not into the watch itself. Log the walk in PokeT-Walk by distance or step count with Ended at set to when it finished, and Health gets the steps spread over that stretch; the Activity rings and calories are not back-filled.
If a watch spends the morning on its charger during a 4 km walk, the walk can still be added afterwards from the iPhone, and it appears in Health within seconds of tapping. The Move ring is not back-filled, since the app writes to Apple Health only, not to the watch.
Did your iPhone count the walk anyway?
Check this before adding anything. If the iPhone was in your pocket, it counted steps on its own, and Health already has them with the phone as the source. Adding the walk again on top would count it twice.
Open the Health app, tap Steps, then Show All Data, and look at the entries for that time. Phone in a pocket: probably fine already. Phone on the kitchen table or in a bag: that is the gap to fill.
How to add the steps you missed
- On Home, open Ended at and pick the date and time you got back. It goes back 7 days.
- Know the distance and want the steps worked out from your pace? Open Custom Walk, set Distance and Pace, check the Summary and tap Add to Health.
- Know a step count instead (from a treadmill screen, a friend's tracker, or the route length times your own stride)? Type it into Custom amount, pick a Spread over option and tap Add.
- Look for the "Written to Health at" line on Home, then tap Open Health to see the entry with PokeT-Walk as its source.
Ended at jumps back to now after every log. If you are adding two missed walks from different days, set it again before the second one.
Worked example: the 4 km loop, watch on the charger
Take a 4 km walk that ended at 08:40. Here are three ways to log it, all computed with the app's own rules (1,300 steps per km below 7 km/h).
| How | What Health gets | Time covered | Free or PRO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custom Walk, 4.0 km at 5.0 km/h | 5,200 steps, 4 km | 48 min, 07:52 to 08:40 | PRO |
| Custom amount 5,200, Spread over 1 hour | 5,200 steps in 60 one-minute samples of 76 to 98, 4 km | 60 min, 07:40 to 08:40 | Free, one ad |
| 5KM button | 6,500 steps, 5 km | 75 min, 07:25 to 08:40 | Free, one ad |
The second row is typically the better fit. Typing the count is free, and it lands exactly on 4 km, no rounding. The 5KM button would tack on 1,300 steps not actually walked, so it is less accurate here.
One thing the app does, visible in Show All Data: if another source (the iPhone, the watch) already has steps in some of those minutes, PokeT-Walk slides its own samples into the empty minutes around them instead of writing over them. It only does that when at least half the stretch is empty; otherwise it writes across the whole stretch.
Can I add steps to Apple Watch rings?
No. PokeT-Walk writes steps and walking distance to Apple Health on the iPhone. It writes no calories, it has no watch app, and the Activity rings are worked out from what the watch measured, so they are not affected by a logged walk.
What you can add is a workout record. In Settings, under Walks, turn on Also save as a walk: each log is then also saved as an outdoor walking workout over the same minutes, with the steps and distance but no calories. Health asks for workout permission the first time; if you say no, the steps still save.
Free or PRO for a forgotten-watch walk
- Free: the 2KM, 5KM and 7KM buttons, the 1,000, 3,000 and 5,000 presets and any number in Custom amount, each after a short ad. If you close the ad early, nothing is logged.
- PRO: no ads, Custom Walk for any distance from 0.5 to 25 km and any pace from 2 to 12 km/h, plus the 10KM, 12KM and 10,000 buttons.
- Either way: kilometres only, no miles field. A 2.5-mile walk is 4.02 km, so pick 4.0 in Custom Walk or type 5,230 steps.
- The steps for a distance follow a fixed rule, not your height or stride. If you know the real count, type that.
If your iPhone was with you the whole time, you do not need this app for that walk. It is for the walks nothing counted.
