Km to steps: a walking and running chart from 1 to 12 km
About 1,300 steps per kilometre when walking and about 1,000 when running, because a walking stride is roughly 0.77 m and a running stride about 1 m. PokeT-Walk uses exactly those figures, switching at 7 km/h, when it turns a distance into steps for Apple Health.
How many steps in a km walking?
At the walking rule, 1 km is 1,300 steps. So 5 km in steps is 6,500 and 10 km is 13,000. The stride behind that figure is 1,000 m ÷ 1,300 = 0.769 m, a normal adult walking step.
| Distance | Walking (below 7 km/h) | Running (7 km/h or faster) | Time at 4 km/h |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 km | 1,300 | 1,000 | 15 min |
| 2 km | 2,600 | 2,000 | 30 min |
| 3 km | 3,900 | 3,000 | 45 min |
| 5 km | 6,500 | 5,000 | 75 min |
| 7 km | 9,100 | 7,000 | 105 min |
| 8 km | 10,400 | 8,000 | 120 min |
| 10 km | 13,000 | 10,000 | 150 min |
| 12 km | 15,600 | 12,000 | 180 min |
Steps per km when running
Running strides are longer, so a kilometre takes fewer of them: 1,000 per km at the app's running rule. In Custom Walk, the switch happens when Pace reaches 7 km/h. 5 km at 8 km/h is 5,000 steps over 38 minutes; the same 5 km at 5 km/h is 6,500 steps over 60 minutes.
10,000 steps in km, and steps to km
Divide by 1,300 to go from walking steps to kilometres. 10,000 steps is 7.692 km, which at 4 km/h is just under two hours of walking. At the running rule the same 10,000 steps would be 10 km.
| Steps | Km |
|---|---|
| 1,000 | 0.769 |
| 3,000 | 2.308 |
| 5,000 | 3.846 |
| 8,000 | 6.154 |
| 10,000 | 7.692 |
| 15,000 | 11.538 |
How many steps in a mile?
A mile is 1.609344 km, so at the walking rule it is about 2,092 steps, and about 1,609 at the running rule. 2 miles is about 4,184 walking steps and 3 miles about 6,276. The app itself only takes kilometres.
Why your own number is different
Stride depends on height, leg length, speed, terrain and footwear. A tall person walking briskly covers a km in fewer steps than a shorter person strolling, and an individual's count on a flat path can land a bit under the 1,300 average used here. The figures above are averages for logging, not a measurement of you, and PokeT-Walk does not ask for height or stride.
Log a distance as steps with PokeT-Walk
- For a walk at 4 km/h, tap 2KM, 5KM or 7KM on Home (10KM and 12KM with PRO).
- For your own speed, open Custom Walk, set Distance and Pace, and check the Summary before Add to Health.
- For miles or an odd distance, convert to steps yourself and type them into Custom amount, then tap Add. The app saves steps ÷ 1,300 as the distance.
Whichever way you log, the steps and the distance go into Apple Health together, so the two always agree.
