How to add steps manually to Apple Health as a logged entry
Open PokeT-Walk, tap a Quick steps preset or type the number into Custom amount, then tap Add. This is for a day your phone sat charging on the nightstand for hours: the steps and a matching walking distance go in at once, and with Natural Pace on they split into roughly one-minute samples instead of landing as a single spike.
Can you manually add steps to Apple Health?
Yes. Apple Health takes step data from any app you allow, and it records which app wrote each entry. You can also type a value into the Health app yourself, but one typed number lands as a single block. PokeT-Walk spreads the count over time instead.
This is for days the phone missed part of a walk: charging on the desk, locked in a drawer, or riding in a bag under the table. The steps were real; the iPhone just had no way to feel them.
How to add steps with PokeT-Walk
- The first time, allow Health access when iOS asks, with Steps and Walking + Running Distance turned on.
- On Home, pick a Spread over option: Quick for the shortest natural time, 1 hour or 3 hours to stretch the steps further.
- If the walk finished earlier, set Ended at to that moment (up to 7 days back). For a walk that just ended, leave it.
- Tap 1,000, 3,000 or 5,000 under Quick steps, or type a number into Custom amount and tap Add.
- Free version: in the Watch an ad to log steps prompt, tap Watch Ad and let it finish. With PRO the log goes straight in.
- Check the line "Written to Health at" under the controls, then tap Open Health to see it in Health.
What exactly gets written? A worked example
Take 5,000 steps with Quick selected and Natural Pace on. At an average of 110 steps per minute, 5,000 steps need 45.45 minutes, so the app writes 45 samples of about a minute, 97 to 125 steps each. The total is exactly 5,000, and the distance saved is 5,000 ÷ 1,300 = 3.846 km.
| Spread over | Time covered | Samples | Steps per sample | Distance written |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quick | 45.45 min | 45 | 97–125 | 3.846 km |
| 1 hour | 60 min | 60 | 73–94 | 3.846 km |
| 3 hours | 180 min | 180 | 24–32 | 3.846 km |
Each sample wobbles up to 12% around its share, because nobody walks to a metronome, and the leftover steps are handed out one at a time so the total never drifts. When a count needs longer than the option you picked, the natural time wins: 10,000 steps on 1 hour still take 90.91 minutes, written as 91 samples.
Why does Natural Pace sometimes stop a log?
With Keep a natural pace on, which is the default, the steps must fit into the free part of today: from midnight to about 15 minutes ago, minus time earlier entries already use. Early in the morning there is little room. At 00:30 only about 1,650 steps fit.
When a log does not fit, the alert Natural Pace is on gives you two choices. Write them all now switches the guard off and logs at once; Keep it natural cancels so you can add the steps later in the day. On the free version this check comes after the ad, so cancelling means another ad when you try again. The guard stays off until you turn it back on in Settings under Natural Pace.
Tips and common mistakes
- Seen the write time? Then Health has the steps. Logging them again while another app catches up only doubles them.
- A real count from a pedometer or watch beats any conversion from distance, so type it when you have one.
- The "Today:" card on Home is Health's total from every source, not only what this app added. The widget Steps added today shows only the app's own entries.
- Entries left on now end about 15 minutes before the present. Those last minutes are still being reported by the iPhone's own pedometer, and Health might keep its count over yours there.
- Big numbers take time: with Natural Pace on, 10,000 steps cover just over an hour and a half of the day.
