Boxing round timer app for 3-minute rounds and 1-minute rest

Sparring 3×3 covers most training needs before Pro Boxing's full twelve rounds come into play. Open Boxing Timer, tap Setup, pick one and press Play: a bell starts and ends every round, a wooden clacker warns you with 10 seconds left, and the rest minute counts down on its own.

How long is a boxing round?

Three minutes, usually, with a 1-minute break for the pros. Amateur and novice bouts often run shorter 2-minute rounds instead. Rules differ between events and levels, so check the ones for your fight — for plain training, 3 on and 1 off is the rhythm most boxers build their conditioning around, including outside of fight prep.

The app's boxing formats cover both lengths. The table shows each one and how long the whole session lasts, prep countdown included.

Boxing presets in the app and their total time
PresetRounds x round / restPrepTotal
Amateur Boxing3 x 2:00 / 1:0010 s8:10
Golden Gloves3 x 2:00 / 1:0010 s8:10
Sparring 3×33 x 3:00 / 1:0010 s11:10
Bag Work 2×26 x 2:00 / 0:305 s14:35
Pro Boxing12 x 3:00 / 1:0010 s47:10

The totals come from prep + rounds x round + rests between rounds. There is no rest after the final round, so Pro Boxing is 10 s + 36:00 of boxing + 11 rests of 1:00 = 47:10.

How to set up a 3 minute boxing timer

  1. Tap the list icon at the top left to open Setup, then the Boxing filter chip under Presets.
  2. Tap Sparring 3×3 for three 3-minute rounds, or Pro Boxing for twelve. A checkmark shows the one selected. Close the sheet.
  3. The main screen now shows PREP 0:10, ROUND 3:00 and REST 1:00. Place the phone where you can hear it and tap Play.
  4. Box when the ring turns green and the bell rings. At 0:10 left you hear clack-clack-clack and feel a strong vibration.
  5. At the bell, the blue rest countdown starts. When it reaches zero the next round starts with another bell.
  6. After the last round the screen shows DONE and the session is saved in History.

Want a different mix, such as 3-minute rounds with only 30 seconds of rest? Built-in presets can't be edited, so build it in Custom Timer: 6 rounds of 3:00 with 0:30 rest and 10 s prep lasts 20:40.

What does the boxing timer bell sound like?

A triple ding-ding-ding, like an actual ring bell, for the free Classic Bell. Pro adds an Air Horn and a Gong; some prefer the Gong because the Classic Bell can feel repetitive over a long day. Pick one under Bell Sound in Setup; tapping it plays a preview first. The sound is the same at the start and the end of a round, and the phone vibrates with each one.

The bell plays even with the silent switch on and mixes over your music instead of pausing it. There is no volume slider in the app, so set the phone volume before you start, or connect a speaker for a big room.

Does it keep time with the phone locked or in my pocket?

Yes. The countdown is tied to the real clock, the screen stays awake while the timer runs, and if you lock the phone the bell and clacker keep sounding. The Lock Screen and Dynamic Island show the phase (FIGHT, REST or PREP), the round and the time left. Don't swipe the app away from the app switcher: that stops the timer.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Change preset only while the timer is stopped. Picking a new one during a workout does not apply until you tap Stop.
  • Use Skip to cut a rest short or jump to the next round; skipping the last round ends the workout.
  • For shadowboxing in front of a mirror, prop the phone up: the ring colour (green, blue, yellow) is readable from across the room.
  • Bag Work 2×2 is a denser session: six 2-minute rounds with only 30 seconds between them.

Is there a boxing timer app with no ads?

Yes and no. The free version shows a banner under the timer and some full-screen ads between workouts, never closer than 2 minutes apart — not disruptive, since they land between rounds rather than during one. Any Pro purchase removes all of it, and everything described on this page works fine without paying.

Questions and answers

Can I use it for sparring rounds?
Yes. Sparring 3×3 gives three 3-minute rounds with a minute of rest, 11:10 in total with prep. For more rounds, build a custom timer with the same times and a higher round count.
Does the warning sound at 10 seconds?
On every boxing preset, yes: a clacker sound and a strong vibration with 10 seconds left in each round. It does not sound during rest. In a custom timer you can move it anywhere from 1 to 30 seconds, or set 0 to turn it off.
Can a coach use it for a whole class?
Yes, it can run from the front of a room on an iPad propped against a wall. Just make sure the device is loud enough: the bell follows device volume with no in-app boost, so a Bluetooth speaker helps once the class gets past six or seven people.
