MMA round timer app: 5-minute rounds with 1-minute rest

Five minutes feels short on paper and long on the mat. Pick MMA Standard for 3 rounds of 5:00 with 1:00 rest (17:10 with prep), or MMA Championship for 5 (29:10) — a bell marks every change, and a clacker sounds with 10 seconds left in each round.

How long are MMA rounds?

Five minutes for the pros, in most organisations. Three rounds is the standard bout length, and title or main-event fights often go to five. Amateur and regional rules can differ quite a bit, so check whatever your own event uses before you build a camp schedule around this.

How long between MMA rounds?

The usual break is 1 minute, and that is what the app's MMA presets use. The table shows each MMA format in the app with its total length.

MMA presets and total time
PresetRounds x round / restPrepWarningTotal
MMA Standard3 x 5:00 / 1:0010 s10 s17:10
MMA Championship5 x 5:00 / 1:0010 s10 s29:10
Grappling 5×55 x 5:00 / 1:0010 s10 s29:10

MMA Championship adds up like this: 10 s of prep, 5 x 5:00 = 25:00 of fighting and 4 rests of 1:00 = 4:00. There is no rest after round 5.

How to run MMA rounds in the app

  1. Tap the list icon at the top left to open Setup, then the MMA chip.
  2. Choose MMA Standard, MMA Championship or Grappling 5×5. Close the sheet.
  3. The main screen shows ROUND 5:00 and REST 1:00. Tap Play: a 10-second yellow prep runs first.
  4. The bell starts round 1 and the header counts the rounds. With 10 seconds left you hear the clacker and feel a strong vibration.
  5. Use the 1-minute rest to drink and reset. The next bell starts the next round.
  6. Tap Stop at any time to end early. If you have trained at least 10 seconds, the session is still saved to History.

Training tips for 5-minute rounds

  • Five minutes can drag by minute three, however many rounds in. Treat the 10-second clacker as your corner shouting at you to push for a finish or a scramble.
  • For shorter, harder bursts try the 3:00 kickboxing formats, or build 5:00 / 0:30 in Custom Timer; rest can go down to 0 in 5-second steps.
  • Keep the phone off the mat itself. An Apple Watch lets you pause, skip or stop from your wrist, with a tap at each phase change.
  • Switching preset mid-round does nothing — it waits until you tap Stop.

Keeping track of your MMA rounds

Every finished or stopped session lands in History with the preset name, the rounds you completed and your active time. Rounds count only when finished: stop during round 3 of MMA Standard and the entry shows 2 rounds; stop during the rest after round 3 and it shows 3. Pauses are not counted in the time.

Questions and answers

Can I use it as an MMA gym timer for a class?
Yes. Put an iPhone or iPad on a bench with the volume up and everyone hears the bell and the clacker. There is no in-app volume, so a speaker helps in a big room.
Does the Apple Watch ring the bell?
No, and that trips people up. The Watch mirrors the round and countdown, taps your wrist at each phase change, and gives you Stop, Play/Pause and Skip — but the iPhone is the one doing the timing and playing the actual bell.
Can I run MMA rounds that never end?
Yes. In Custom Timer set rounds to 0, which shows as unlimited, with 5:00 rounds and 1:00 rest. It keeps going until you tap Stop.
